Since commit bfa644bfa9e3 (x86, irq: Convert IOAPIC to use hierarchy
irqdomain interfaces) Intel MID platforms crashes on boot:
Enabling APIC mode: Flat. Using 1 I/O APICs
BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000018
IP: [<c107bdc6>] __irq_domain_alloc_irqs+0xff/0x250
The reason is that mp_map_pin_to_irq() assumes blindly that any non
PCI interrupt is legacy, but thats wrong for MID platforms as they
have no legacy interrupt support.
alloc_irq_from_domain() and mp_init_irq_at_boot() have checks for
this, but mp_map_pin_to_irq() is lacking one.
Instead of copying the same code another time, move the check to an
inline function and use it everywhere.

We have 3 identical copies of the ioapic domain ops for acpi, mpparse,
and sfi. Have a global one in the io_apic code and be done with it.
To avoid include hell in io_apic.h, create a private irqdomain header
and include the generic irqdomain header from there.

Reverts: eda7516e1d428 'irqdomain: Correct early allocation of irq

Now that we distangled the allocations and the enablement of irq
remapping and removed the pointless preempt disabled region from
native_smp_prepare_cpus() we can remove that hackaround

The whole iommu setup for irq remapping is a convoluted mess. The
iommu detect function gets called from mem_init() and the prepare
callback gets called from enable_IR_x2apic() for unknown reasons.
Of course AMD and Intel setup differs in nonsensical ways. Intels
prepare callback is explicit while AMDs prepare callback is implicit
in setup_irq_remapping_ops() just to be called in the prepare call
again.
Because all of this gets called from enable_IR_x2apic() and the dmar
prepare function merily parses the ACPI tables, but does not allocate
memory we end up with memory allocation from irq disabled context
later on.
AMDs iommu code at least allocates the required memory from the
prepare function. That has issues as well, but thats not scope of this
patch.
The goal of this change is to distangle the allocation from the actual
enablement. There is no point to allocate memory from irq disabled
regions with GFP_ATOMIC just because it does not matter at that point
in the boot stage. It matters with physical hotplug later on.
There is another issue with the current setup. Due to the conversion
to stacked irqdomains we end up with a call into the irqdomain
allocation code from irq disabled context, but that code does
GFP_KERNEL allocations rightfully as there is no reason to do
preperatory allocations with GFP_ATOMIC.
That change caused the allocator code to complain about GFP_KERNEL
allocations invoked in atomic context. Boris provided a temporary
hackaround which changed the GFP flags if irq_domain_add() got called
from atomic context. Not pretty and we really dont want to get this
into a mainline release for obvious reasons.
Move the ACPI table parsing and the resulting memory allocations from
the enable to the prepare function. That allows to get rid of the
horrible hackaround in irq_domain_add() later.

enable_IR_x2apic() calls setup_irq_remapping_ops() which by default
installs the intel dmar remapping ops and then calls the amd iommu irq
remapping prepare callback to figure out whether we are running on an
AMD machine with irq remapping hardware.
Right after that it calls irq_remapping_prepare() which pointlessly
checks:
if (!remap_ops || !remap_ops->prepare)
return -ENODEV;
and then calls
remap_ops->prepare()
which is silly in the AMD case as it got called from
setup_irq_remapping_ops() already a few microseconds ago.
Simplify this and just collapse everything into
irq_remapping_prepare().
The irq_remapping_prepare() remains still silly as it assigns blindly
the intel ops, but that's not scope of this patch.
The scope here is to move the preperatory work, i.e. memory
allocations out of the atomic section which is required to enable irq
remapping.

There is no reason to keep preemption disabled in this function.
We only have two other threads live: kthreadd and idle. Neither of
them is going to preempt. But that preempt_disable forces all the code
inside to do GFP_ATOMIC allocations which is just insane.
Remove it.

I'm seeing the following lockdep splat on an x2APIC machine with
interrupts remapping. The problem is that enable_IR_x2apic() disables
interrupts before doing any further initialization. However, after
having moved to irq domains, domain allocation cannot happen with
interrupts disabled (GFP_KERNEL).
A proper fix would be to move that initialization to the early irq setup
path, which is something for another day. It is more involved work too.
So do a temporary fix which should not encourage the behaviour of even
assuming the irq domains code should be called with interrupts disabled.
Make it x86-only too.

Boris reported, that the rework of the ioapic to use cached entry data
broke his older AMD machine.
The cause for this is that the cached entry.dest field is assigned
with SET_APIC_LOGICAL_ID(cfg->desc_apicid). SET_APIC_LOGICAL_ID left
shifts the value by 24. This is obviously wrong as the dest field is
already at the proper bit position, so the extra shift essentially
cleared the dest field.
Remove SET_APIC_LOGICAL_ID and assign cfg->desc_apicid directly.
This got introduced in commit bfa644bfa9e3 but only becomes visible
since the conversion to use cached entries in commit fda7c08b1349

MID has no PIC, but depending on the platform it requires the
abt_timer, which is connected to irq0. The timer is set up at
late_time_init().
But, looking at the MID code it seems, that there is no reason to do
so. The only code which might need the timer working is the TSC
calibration code, but thats a non issue on MID as that is using its
own empty calibration function. And check_timer() is not invoked
either because MID has no PIC and therefor no legacy irqs.
So if you look at intel_mid_time_init() then you'll see that in the
ARAT case the timer setup is skipped already. So until the point where
x86_init.timers.setup_percpu_clockev() is called for the boot cpu
nothing really needs a timer on MID.
According to the MID code the apbt horror is only used for moorestown.
Medfield and later use the local apic timer without the apbt nonsense.
The best thing we can do is to drop moorestown support and get rid of
that apbt nonsense alltogether.
I don't think anyone deeply cares about it not being supported from
3.18 on. The number of devices which sport a moorestown should be
pretty limited and the only relevant use case of those is to act as a
pocket heater with short battery life time. Its pretty pointless to
update kernels on pocket heaters except for bragging reasons.
If someone at Intel really thinks that we need to keep moorestown
alive for other than documentary and sentimental reasons, then we can
move the apbt setup to x86_init.timers.setup_percpu_clockev(). At that
point the IOAPIC is setup already, so it should just work.

Introduce new interfaces for interrupt remapping drivers to support
hierarchy irqdomain:
1) irq_remapping_get_ir_irq_domain(): get irqdomain associated with an
interrupt remapping unit. IOAPIC/HPET drivers use this interface to
get parent interrupt remapping irqdomain.
2) irq_remapping_get_irq_domain(): get irqdomain for an IRQ allocation.
This is mainly used to support MSI irqdomain. We must build one MSI
irqdomain for each interrupt remapping unit. MSI driver calls this
interface to get MSI irqdomain associated with an IR irqdomain which
manages the PCI devices. In a further step we will store the irqdomain
pointer in the device struct to avoid this call in the irq allocation
path.
Architecture specific needs to implement two hooks:
1) arch_get_ir_parent_domain(): get parent irqdomain for IR irqdomain,
which is x86_vector_domain on x86 platforms.
2) arch_create_msi_irq_domain(): create an MSI irqdomain associated with
the interrupt remapping unit.
We also add following callbacks into struct irq_remap_ops:
struct irq_domain *(*get_ir_irq_domain)(struct irq_alloc_info *);
struct irq_domain *(*get_irq_domain)(struct irq_alloc_info *);
Once all clients of IR have been converted to new hierarchy irqdomain
interfaces, we will:
1) Remove set_ioapic_entry, set_affinity, free_irq, compose_msi_msg,
msi_alloc_irq, msi_setup_irq, setup_hpet_msi from struct remap_osp
2) Kill setup_ioapic_remapped_entry, free_remapped_irq,
compose_remapped_msi_msg, setup_hpet_msi_remapped, setup_remapped_irq.
3) Simplify x86_io_apic_ops and x86_msi.
We could achieve a much more clear architecture with all these changes
applied.

Abstract CPU local APIC as an interrupt controller and create an
irqdomain for it to manage CPU interrupt vectors. It's the base to
enable hierarchy irqdomain on x86 systems. Eventually we will build
a irqdomain hierarchy as below:
IOAPIC domain-------|
MSI/MSI-x domain------> [Inerrupt Remapping domain] -> CPU vector domain
HPET_IRQ domain_____| ^
DMAR domain---------------------------------------------------|
HT_IRQ domain-------------------------------------------------|

Cache destination CPU APIC ID into struct irq_cfg when assigning vector

of calling apic->cpu_mask_to_apicid_and(), it helps to hide APIC driver

This is required to accomodate the pending patches in the x86 irq area
which depend on both branches.

updates for the msi function renames are done in a seperate patch.

With the new stacked irq domains, it becomes pretty tempting to
allocate an MSI domain per PCI bus, which would remove the requirement
of either relying on arch-specific code, or a default PCI MSI domain.
By allowing the msi_controller structure to carry a pointer to an
irq_domain, we can easily use this in pci_msi_setup_msi_irqs. The
existing code can still be used as a fallback if the MSI driver does
not populate the domain field.
Tested on arm64 with the GICv3 ITS driver.

Provide mechanism to directly alloc/free MSI/MSIX interrupt from

To kill weak functions, this patch introduce a new weak function
arch_get_pci_msi_domain(), which is to retrieve the MSI irqdomain
for a PCI device. This weak function could be killed once we get

To support MSI irq domains we want a generic data structure for
allocation, but we need the option to provide an architecture specific
version of it. So instead of playing #ifdef games in linux/msi.h we
add a generic header file and let architectures decide whether to
include it or to provide their own implementation and provide the
required typedef.
I know that typedefs are not really nice, but in this case there are no
forward declarations required and it's the simplest solution.

With the introduction of stacked domains, we have the issue that,
depending on where in the stack this is called, __irq_set_handler
will succeed or fail: If this is called from the inner irqchip,
__irq_set_handler() will fail, as it will look at the outer domain
as the (desc->irq_data.chip == &no_irq_chip) test fails (we haven't
set the top level yet).
This patch implements the following: "If there is at least one
valid irqchip in the domain, it will probably sort itself out".
This is clearly not ideal, but it is far less confusing then
crashing because the top-level domain is not up yet.

We plan to use hierarchy irqdomain to suppport CPU vector assignment,
interrupt remapping controller, IO-APIC controller, MSI interrupt
and hypertransport interrupt etc on x86 platforms. So extend irqdomain
interfaces to support hierarchy irqdomain.
There are already many clients of current irqdomain interfaces.
To minimize the changes, we choose to introduce new version 2 interfaces
to support hierarchy instead of extending existing irqdomain interfaces.
According to Thomas's suggestion, the most important design decision is
to build hierarchy struct irq_data to support hierarchy irqdomain, so
hierarchy irqdomain related data could be saved in struct irq_data.
With support of hierarchy irq_data, we could also support stacked
irq_chips. This is most useful in case of set_affinity().
The new hierarchy irqdomain introduces following interfaces:
1) irq_domain_alloc_irqs()/irq_domain_free_irqs(): allocate/release IRQ
and related resources.
2) __irq_domain_alloc_irqs(): a special version to support legacy IRQs.
3) irq_domain_activate_irq()/irq_domain_deactivate_irq(): program
interrupt controllers to activate/deactivate interrupt.
There are also several help functions to ease irqdomain implemenations:
1) irq_domain_get_irq_data(): get irq_data associated with a specific
irqdomain.
2) irq_domain_set_hwirq_and_chip(): save irqdomain specific data into
irq_data.

Currently ARM associates an MSI controller with a PCI bus by defining
pcibios_add_bus() and using it to call a struct hw_pci.add_bus() method.
That method sets the struct pci_bus "msi" member. That's unwieldy and
unnecessarily couples MSI with the PCI enumeration code.
On ARM, all devices under the same PCI host bridge share an MSI controller,
so add an msi_controller pointer to the struct pci_sys_data and implement
pcibios_msi_controller() to retrieve it.
This is a step toward moving the msi_controller pointer into the generic
struct pci_host_bridge.

On Intel platforms, an IO Hub (PCI/PCIe host bridge) may contain DMAR
units, so we need to support DMAR hotplug when supporting PCI host
bridge hotplug on Intel platforms.
According to Section 8.8 "Remapping Hardware Unit Hot Plug" in "Intel
Virtualization Technology for Directed IO Architecture Specification
Rev 2.2", ACPI BIOS should implement ACPI _DSM method under the ACPI
object for the PCI host bridge to support DMAR hotplug.
This patch introduces interfaces to parse ACPI _DSM method for
DMAR unit hotplug. It also implements state machines for DMAR unit
hot-addition and hot-removal.

MSI-X vector Mask Bits are in MSI-X Tables in PCI memory space. Xen PV
guests can't write to those tables. MSI vector Mask Bits are in PCI
configuration space. Xen PV guests can write to config space, but those
writes are ignored.
Commit 0e4ccb1505a9 ("PCI: Add x86_msi.msi_mask_irq() and
msix_mask_irq()") added a way to override default_mask_msi_irqs() and
default_mask_msix_irqs() so they can be no-ops in Xen guests, but this is
more complicated than necessary.
Add "pci_msi_ignore_mask" in the core PCI MSI code. If set,
default_mask_msi_irqs() and default_mask_msix_irqs() return without doing
anything. This is less flexible, but much simpler.

The function context_set_address_root() and set_root_value are setting new
address in a wrong way, and this patch is trying to fix this problem.
According to Intel Vt-d specs(Feb 2011, Revision 1.3), Chapter 9.1 and 9.2,
field ctp in root entry is using bits 12:63, field asr in context entry is
using bits 12:63.
To set these fields, the following functions are used:
static inline void context_set_address_root(struct context_entry *context,
unsigned long value);
and
static inline void set_root_value(struct root_entry *root, unsigned long value)
But they are using an invalid method to set these fields, in current code, only
a '|' operator is used to set it. This will not set the asr to the expected
value if it has an old value.
For example:
Before calling this function,
context->lo = 0x3456789012111;
value = 0x123456789abcef12;
After we call context_set_address_root(context, value), expected result is
context->lo == 0x123456789abce111;
But the actual result is:
context->lo == 0x1237577f9bbde111;
So we need to clear bits 12:63 before setting the new value, this will fix
this problem.

When X86_LOCAL_APIC (i.e. unconditionally on x86-64),
first_system_vector will never end up being higher than
LOCAL_TIMER_VECTOR (0xef), and hence building stubs for vectors
0xef...0xff is pointlessly reducing code density. Deal with this at
build time already.
Taking into consideration that X86_64 implies X86_LOCAL_APIC, also
simplify (and hence make easier to read and more consistent with the
change done here) some #if-s in arch/x86/kernel/irqinit.c.
While we could further improve the packing of the IRQ entry stubs (the
four ones now left in the last set could be fit into the four padding
bytes each of the final four sets have) this doesn't seem to provide
any real benefit: Both irq_entries_start and common_interrupt getting
cache line aligned, eliminating the 30th set would just produce 32
bytes of padding between the 29th and common_interrupt.

While f3761db164 ("x86, irq: Fix build error caused by
9eabc99a635a77cbf09") addressed the original build problem,
declaration, inline stub, and definition still seem misplaced: It isn't
really IO-APIC related, and it's being used solely in arch/x86/pci/.
This also means stubbing it out when !CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC was at least
questionable.

We are going to support ACPI based IOAPIC hotplug, so introduce a mutex
to protect IOAPIC data structures from IOAPIC hotplug. We choose to
serialize in ACPI instead of in the IOAPIC core because:
1) currently we only plan to support ACPI based IOAPIC hotplug
2) it's much more cleaner and easier
3) It does't affect IOAPIC discovered by devicetree, SFI and mpparse.

To keep balance of IOAPIC pin reference count, we need to protect
pirq_enable_irq(), acpi_pci_irq_enable() and intel_mid_pci_irq_enable()
from reentrance. There are two cases which will cause reentrance.
The first case is caused by suspend/hibernation. If pcibios_disable_irq
is called during suspending/hibernating, we don't release the assigned
IRQ number, otherwise it may break the suspend/hibernation. So late when
pcibios_enable_irq is called during resume, we shouldn't allocate IRQ
number again.
The second case is that function acpi_pci_irq_enable() may be called
twice for PCI devices present at boot time as below:
1) pci_acpi_init()
--> acpi_pci_irq_enable() if pci_routeirq is true
2) pci_enable_device()
--> pcibios_enable_device()
--> acpi_pci_irq_enable()
We can't kill kernel parameter pci_routeirq yet because it's still

To support IOAPIC hotplug on x86 and IA64 platforms, OS needs to figure
out global interrupt source number(GSI) and IOAPIC enumeration ID
through ACPI interfaces. So BIOS must implement an ACPI IOAPIC device
with _GSB/_UID or _MAT method to support IOAPIC hotplug. OS also needs
to figure out base physical address to access IOAPIC registers. OS may
get the base physical address through PCI BARs if IOAPIC device is
visible in PCI domain, otherwise OS may get the address by ACPI _CRS
method if IOAPIC device is hidden from PCI domain by BIOS.
When adding a PCI subtree, we need to add IOAPIC devices before enabling
all other PCI devices because other PCI devices may use the IOAPIC to
allocate PCI interrupts.
So we plan to reimplement IOAPIC driver as an ACPI instead of PCI driver
due to:
1) hot-pluggable IOAPIC devices are always visible in ACPI domain,
but may or may not be visible in PCI domain.
2) we could explicitly control the order between IOAPIC and other PCI
devices.
We also have another choice to use a PCI driver to manage IOAPIC device
if it's visible in PCI domain and use an ACPI driver if it's only
visible in ACPI domain. But this solution is a little complex.
It shouldn't cause serious backward compatibility issues because:
1) IOAPIC hotplug is never supported on x86 yet because it hasn't
implemented the required acpi_register_ioapic() and
acpi_unregister_ioapic().
2) Currently only ACPI based IOAPIC hotplug is possible on x86 and
IA64, we don't know other specifications and interfaces to support
IOAPIC hotplug yet.
3) We will reimplement an ACPI IOAPIC driver to support IOAPIC hotplug.
This change also helps to get rid of the false alarm on all current
Linux distributions:
[ 6.952497] ioapic: probe of 0000:00:05.4 failed with error -22
[ 6.959542] ioapic: probe of 0000:80:05.4 failed with error -22

- A regression from 3.16 which was noticed in 3.17. With the
restructuring of the m25p80.c driver and the SPI NOR library
framework, we omitted proper listing of the SPI device IDs. This
means m25p80.c wouldn't auto-load (modprobe) properly when built as
a module. For now, we duplicate the device IDs into both modules.
- The OMAP / ELM modules were depending on an implicit link ordering.
Use deferred probing so that the new link order (in 3.18-rc) can
still allow for successful probing.

The sk_prot is irda's own set of protocol handlers, so irda should
statically know what that function is anyway, without using an indirect
pointer. And as it happens, we know *exactly* what that pointer is
statically: it's NULL, because irda doesn't define a disconnect
operation.
So calling that function is doubly wrong, and will just cause an oops.

In order to access the shadow VMCS, we need to load it. At this point,
vmx->loaded_vmcs->vmcs and the actually loaded one start to differ. If
we now get preempted by Linux, vmx_vcpu_put and, on return, the
vmx_vcpu_load will work against the wrong vmcs. That can cause
copy_shadow_to_vmcs12 to corrupt the vmcs12 state.
Fix the issue by disabling preemption during the copy operation.
copy_vmcs12_to_shadow is safe from this issue as it is executed by
vmx_vcpu_run when preemption is already disabled before vmentry.
This bug is exposed by running Jailhouse within KVM on CPUs with
shadow VMCS support. Jailhouse never expects an interrupt pending
vmexit, but the bug can cause it if, after copy_shadow_to_vmcs12
is preempted, the active VMCS happens to have the virtual interrupt
pending flag set in the CPU-based execution controls.

Commit d1442d85cc30 ("KVM: x86: Handle errors when RIP is set during far

incorrect evaluation, far jump to segment with L bit cleared (i.e., 32-bit
segment) and RIP with any of the high bits set (i.e, RIP[63:32] != 0) set may
not trigger #GP. As we know, this imposes a security problem.
In addition, the condition for two warnings was incorrect.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull ACPI and power management fixes from Rafael Wysocki:
"These are fixes received after my previous pull request plus one that
has been in the works for quite a while, but its previous version
caused problems to happen, so it's been deferred till now.
Fixed are two recent regressions (MFD enumeration and cpufreq-dt),
ACPI EC regression introduced in 3.17, system suspend error code path
regression introduced in 3.15, an older bug related to recovery from
failing resume from hibernation and a cpufreq-dt driver issue related
to operation performance points.
Specifics:
- Fix a crash on r8a7791/koelsch during resume from system suspend
caused by a recent cpufreq-dt commit (Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Fix an MFD enumeration problem introduced by a recent commit adding
ACPI support to the MFD subsystem that exposed a weakness in the
ACPI core causing ACPI enumeration to be applied to all devices
associated with one ACPI companion object, although it should be
used for one of them only (Mika Westerberg).
- Fix an ACPI EC regression introduced during the 3.17 cycle causing
some Samsung laptops to misbehave as a result of a workaround
targeted at some Acer machines. That includes a revert of a commit
that went too far and a quirk for the Acer machines in question.
From Lv Zheng.
- Fix a regression in the system suspend error code path introduced
during the 3.15 cycle that causes it to fail to take errors from
asychronous execution of "late" suspend callbacks into account
(Imre Deak).
- Fix a long-standing bug in the hibernation resume error code path
that fails to roll back everything correcty on "freeze" callback
errors and leaves some devices in a "suspended" state causing more
breakage to happen subsequently (Imre Deak).
- Make the cpufreq-dt driver disable operation performance points
that are not supported by the VR connected to the CPU voltage plane
with acceptable tolerance instead of constantly failing voltage
scaling later on (Lucas Stach)"
* tag 'pm+acpi-3.18-rc3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm:
ACPI / EC: Fix regression due to conflicting firmware behavior between Samsung and Acer.

cpufreq: cpufreq-dt: Restore default cpumask_setall(policy->cpus)
PM / Sleep: fix recovery during resuming from hibernation
PM / Sleep: fix async suspend_late/freeze_late error handling
ACPI: Use ACPI companion to match only the first physical device
cpufreq: cpufreq-dt: disable unsupported OPPs

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/helgaas/pci
Pull PCI fixes from Bjorn Helgaas:
"These changes, intended for v3.18, fix:
Sysfs
- Fix "enable" filename change (Greg Kroah-Hartman)
An unintentional sysfs filename change in commit 5136b2da770d
("PCI: convert bus code to use dev_groups"), which appeared in
v3.13, changed "enable" to "enabled", and this changes it back.
Old users of "enable" are currently broken and will be helped by
this change. Anything that started to use "enabled" after v3.13
will be broken by this change. If necessary, we can add a symlink
to make both work, but this patch doesn't do that.
PCI device hotplug
- Revert duplicate merge (Kamal Mostafa)
A mistaken duplicate merge that added a check twice. Nothing's
broken; this just removes the unnecessary code.
Freescale i.MX6
- Wait for clocks to stabilize after ref_en (Richard Zhu)
An i.MX6 clock problem that prevents mx6 nitrogen boards from booting"

Rusty noticed a Really Bad Bug (tm) in my NT fix. The entry code
reads out of bounds, causing the NT fix to be unreliable. But, and
this is much, much worse, if your stack is somehow just below the
top of the direct map (or a hole), you read out of bounds and crash.
Excerpt from the crash:
[ 1.129513] RSP: 0018:ffff88001da4bf88 EFLAGS: 00010296
2b:* f7 84 24 90 00 00 00 testl $0x4000,0x90(%rsp)
That read is deterministically above the top of the stack. I
thought I even single-stepped through this code when I wrote it to
check the offset, but I clearly screwed it up.

NULL. Fix from Florian Westphal.

pointers or a real SKB.

12) nf_tables_newchain() was erroneously expecting error pointers from
netdev_alloc_pcpu_stats(). It only returna a valid pointer or
NULL. From Sabrina Dubroca.
13) Fix use-after-free in _decode_session6(), from Li RongQing.
14) When we set the TX flow hash on a socket, we mistakenly do so

18) Fix mis-use of per-cpu memory in TCP md5 code. The problem is
that something that ends up being vmalloc memory can't be passed
to the crypto hash routines via scatter-gather lists. From Eric
Dumazet.
19) Fix regression in promiscuous mode enabling in cdc-ether, from
Olivier Blin.
20) Bucket eviction and frag entry killing can race with eachother,
causing an unlink of the object from the wrong list. Fix from
Nikolay Aleksandrov.

Pull sparc update from David Miller:
"Two changes:
1) It makes no sense to execute a VTOC partition table request in the
Sun virtual block device driver and fail to load if it doesn't
succeed because a) we don't use the result at all and b) it won't
succeed if there is an EFI partition on the disk, for example.
We read the partition table via the normal means in the block layer
