Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for
checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional
difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined
in scripts/Makefile.build:
src := $(obj)
When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does
not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild
resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for
source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a
header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically
passed to the compiler.
This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles
because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter.
To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of
$(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree.
Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following
meanings:
$(obj) - directory in the object tree
$(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit)
$(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree
$(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree
Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced
with $(src).

Currently gen_init_cpio -d <timestamp> is applied to symlinks,
directories and special files. These files are created by
gen_init_cpio from their description. Without <timestamp> option
current time(NULL) is used. And regular files that go in initramfs
are created before cpio generation, so their mtime(s) are preserved.
This is usually not an issue as reproducible builds should rebuild
everything in the distribution, including binaries, configs and whatever
other regular files may find their way into kernel's initramfs.
On the other hand, gen_initramfs.sh usage claims:
> -d <date> Use date for all file mtime values
Ar Arista initramfs files are managed with version control system
that preserves mtime. Those are configs, boot parameters, init scripts,
version files, platform-specific files, probably some others, too.
While it's certainly possible to work this around by copying the file
into temp directory and adjusting mtime prior to gen_init_cpio call,
I don't see why it needs workarounds.
The intended user of -d <date> option is the one that needs to create
a reproducible build, see commit a8b8017c34fe ("initramfs: Use
KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP for generated entries"). If a user wants
the build reproduction, they use -d <date>, which can be set on all
types of files, without surprising exceptions and workarounds.
Let's KISS here and just apply the time that user specified
with -d option.

The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals
that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX
or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to
enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether
things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some
distro packages that are rarely used in practice.
None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support
any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as
'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers
that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that
matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture
upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel
firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2
reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original
architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it
deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as
Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have
dropped support years ago.
While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common
good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the
Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the
fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on
Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in
the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64
could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is
actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case.
There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is
generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64
but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would
like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue
code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64
be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead
of keeping it supported is real.
So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely.
This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5],
which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known
good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow
once the kernel support is removed.

gen_initramfs.sh has an internal dependency on KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP
for generating file mtimes that is not exposed to make, so changing
KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP will not trigger a rebuild of the archive.
Declare the mtime date as a new parameter to gen_initramfs.sh to encode
KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP in the shell command, thereby making make aware
of the dependency.
It will rebuild if KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP changes or is newly set/unset.
It will _not_ rebuild if KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP is unset before and
after. This should be fine for anyone who doesn't care about setting
specific build times in the first place.

Similar to commit 4c9d410f32b3 ("initramfs: Check timestamp to prevent
broken cpio archive"), except asserts that the timestamp is
non-negative. This can happen when the KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP is a value
before UNIX epoch, which may be set when making reproducible builds that
don't want to look like they use a valid date.
While support for dates before 1970 might not be supported, this is more
about preventing undetected CPIO corruption. The printf's use a minimum
length format specifier, and will happily make the field longer than 8
characters if they need to.

Some UAPI headers included <stdlib.h>, like this:
#ifndef __KERNEL__
#include <stdlib.h>
#endif
As it turned out, they just included it for no good reason.
After some fixes, now I can compile-test UAPI headers
(CONFIG_UAPI_HEADER_TEST=y) without including <stdlib.h> from the
system header search paths.
To avoid somebody getting it back again, this commit adds the dummy
header, usr/dummy-include/stdlib.h
I added $(srctree)/usr/dummy-include to the header search paths.
Because it is searched before the system directories, if someone
tries to include <stdlib.h>, they will see the error message.
While I am here, I also replaced $(objtree)/usr/include with $(obj),
but it has no functional change.
If we can make kernel headers self-contained (that is, none of exported
kernel headers includes system headers), we will be able to add the
-nostdinc flag, but that is much far from where we stand now.
As a realistic solution, we can ban header inclusion individually by
putting a dummy header into usr/dummy-include/.
Currently, no header include <stdbool.h>. I put it as well before somebody
attempts to use it.

Documentation/driver-api/early-userspace/buffer-format.rst includes the
specification for checksum-enabled cpio archives. Implement support for
this format in gen_init_cpio via a new '-c' parameter.

When processing a "file" entry, gen_init_cpio attempts to allocate a
buffer large enough to stage the entire contents of the source file. It
then attempts to fill the buffer via a single read() call and subsequently
writes out the entire buffer length, without checking that read() returned
the full length, potentially writing uninitialized buffer memory.
Fix this by breaking up file I/O into 64k chunks and only writing the
length returned by the prior read() call.

The UAPI header tests are checking that the generated headers do not
have syntax errors. There's no need to run the rest of the compilation
pipeline after semantic analysis has run. Replace -S -o /dev/null with
-fsyntax-only.

When you compile-test UAPI headers (CONFIG_UAPI_HEADER_TEST=y) with
Clang, they are currently compiled for the host target (likely x86_64)
regardless of the given ARCH=.
In fact, some exported headers include libc headers. For example,
include/uapi/linux/agpgart.h includes <stdlib.h> after being exported.
The header search paths should match to the target we are compiling
them for.
Pick up the --target triple from KBUILD_CFLAGS in the same ways as
commit 7f58b487e9ff ("kbuild: make Clang build userprogs for target
architecture").

extra-y is not run for 'make modules'. The header compile test should
be executed irrespective of the build target. always-y is a better fit.

Allow additional arguments be passed to userprogs compilation.
Reproducible clang builds need to provide a sysroot and gcc path to
ensure the same toolchain is used across hosts. KCFLAGS is not currently
used for any user programs compilation, so add new USERCFLAGS and
USERLDFLAGS which serves similar purpose as HOSTCFLAGS/HOSTLDFLAGS.
Clang might detect GCC installation on hosts which have it installed
to a default location in /. With addition of these environment
variables, you can specify flags such as:
$ make USERCFLAGS=--sysroot=/path/to/sysroot
This can also be used to specify different sysroots such as musl or
bionic which may be installed on the host in paths that the compiler
may not search by default.

cmd_copy and cmd_shipped have similar functionality. The difference is
that cmd_copy uses 'cp' while cmd_shipped 'cat'.
Unify them into cmd_copy because this macro name is more intuitive.
Going forward, cmd_copy will use 'cat' to avoid the permission issue.
I also thought of 'cp --no-preserve=mode' but this option is not
mentioned in the POSIX spec [1], so I am keeping the 'cat' command.

As linux/nfc.h userspace compilation was finally fixed by commits
79b69a83705e ("nfc: uapi: use kernel size_t to fix user-space builds")
and 7175f02c4e5f ("uapi: fix linux/nfc.h userspace compilation errors"),
there is no need to keep the compile-test exception for it in
usr/include/Makefile.

GZIP-compressed files end with 4 byte data that represents the size
of the original input. The decompressors (the self-extracting kernel)
exploit it to know the vmlinux size beforehand. To mimic the GZIP's
trailer, Kbuild provides cmd_{bzip2,lzma,lzo,lz4,xzkern,zstd22}.
Unfortunately these macros are used everywhere despite the appended
size data is only useful for the decompressors.
There is no guarantee that such hand-crafted trailers are safely ignored.
In fact, the kernel refuses compressed initramdfs with the garbage data.
That is why usr/Makefile overrides size_append to make it no-op.
To limit the use of such broken compressed files, this commit renames
the existing macros as follows:
cmd_bzip2 --> cmd_bzip2_with_size
cmd_lzma --> cmd_lzma_with_size
cmd_lzo --> cmd_lzo_with_size
cmd_lz4 --> cmd_lz4_with_size
cmd_xzkern --> cmd_xzkern_with_size
cmd_zstd22 --> cmd_zstd22_with_size
To keep the decompressors working, I updated the following Makefiles
accordingly:
arch/arm/boot/compressed/Makefile
arch/h8300/boot/compressed/Makefile
arch/mips/boot/compressed/Makefile
arch/parisc/boot/compressed/Makefile
arch/s390/boot/compressed/Makefile

I reused the current macro names for the normal usecases; they produce
the compressed data in the proper format.
I did not touch the following:

arch/riscv/boot/Makefile
arch/sh/boot/Makefile
kernel/Makefile
This means those Makefiles will stop appending the size data.
I dropped the 'override size_append' hack from usr/Makefile.

The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include
include/config/auto.conf.
Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles,
we can change it into a more Make-friendly form.
Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes
(both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf):
CONFIG_X="foo bar"
Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well)
verbatim. We must rip them off when used.
There are some patterns:
[1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X))
[2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%)
[3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X))
[4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X))
These are not only ugly, but also fragile.
[1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like
CONFIG_X=" foo bar "
[3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like
CONFIG_X="foo\"bar"
[4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process.
Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles.
This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf.

Cpio format reserves 8 bytes for an ASCII representation of a time_t timestamp.
While 2106-02-07 06:28:15 UTC (time_t = 0xffffffff) is still some years in the
future, a poorly chosen date string for KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP, converted into
seconds since the epoch, might lead to exceeded cpio timestamp limits that
result in a broken cpio archive. Add timestamp checks to prevent overrun of
the 8-byte cpio header field.
My colleague Thomas Kühnel discovered the behaviour, when we accidentally fed
SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH to KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP as is: some timestamps (e.g.
1607420928 = 2021-12-08 9:48:48 UTC) will be interpreted by `date` as a valid
date specification of science fictional times (here: year 160742). Even though
this is bad input for KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP, it should not break the initramfs
cpio format.

LANG gives a weak default to each LC_* in case it is not explicitly
defined. LC_ALL, if set, overrides all other LC_* variables.
LANG < LC_CTYPE, LC_COLLATE, LC_MONETARY, LC_NUMERIC, ... < LC_ALL
This is why documentation such as [1] suggests to set LC_ALL in build
scripts to get the deterministic result.
LANG=C is not strong enough to override LC_* that may be set by end
users.

The current .gitignore intends to ignore everything under usr/include/
except .gitignore and Makefile.
A cleaner solution is to use a pattern suffixed with '/', which matches
only directories. It works well here because all the exported headers
are located in sub-directories, like <linux/*.h>, <asm/*.h>.

- Add support for a zstd compressed initramfs.
- Add compression for compressing built-in initramfs with zstd.
I have tested this patch by boot testing with buildroot and QEMU.
Specifically, I booted the kernel with both a zstd and gzip compressed
initramfs, both built into the kernel and separate. I ensured that the
correct compression algorithm was used. I tested on arm, aarch64, i386,
and x86_64.
This patch has been tested in production on aarch64 and x86_64 devices.
Additionally, I have performance measurements from internal use in
production. On an aarch64 device we saw 19 second boot time improvement
from switching from lzma to zstd (27 seconds to 8 seconds). On an x86_64
device we saw a 9 second boot time reduction from switching from xz to
zstd.

It's unusable from userland - it uses elf_gregset_t, which is not
provided by exported headers. glibc has it in sys/procfs.h, but
the same file defines struct elf_prstatus, so linux/elfcore.h can't
be included once sys/procfs.h has been pulled. Same goes for uclibc
and dietlibc simply doesn't have elf_gregset_t defined anywhere.
IOW, no userland source is including that thing.

bpfilter_umh is built for the default machine bit of the compiler,
which may not match to the bit size of the kernel.
This happens in the scenario below:
You can use biarch GCC that defaults to 64-bit for building the 32-bit
kernel. In this case, Kbuild passes -m32 to teach the compiler to
produce 32-bit kernel space objects. However, it is missing when
building bpfilter_umh. It is built as a 64-bit ELF, and then embedded
into the 32-bit kernel.
The 32-bit kernel and 64-bit umh is a bad combination.
In theory, we can have 32-bit umh running on 64-bit kernel, but we do
not have a good reason to support such a usecase.
The best is to match the bit size between them.
Pass -m32 or -m64 to the umh build command if it is found in
$(KBUILD_CFLAGS). Evaluate CC_CAN_LINK against the kernel bit-size.

This omits system headers from the generated header dependency.
System headers are not updated unless you upgrade the compiler. Nor do
they contain CONFIG options, so fixdep does not need to parse them.
Having said that, the effect of this optimization will be quite small
because the kernel code generally does not include system headers
except <stdarg.h>. Host programs include a lot of system headers,
but there are not so many in the kernel tree.
At first, keeping system headers in .*.cmd files might be useful to
detect the compiler update, but there is no guarantee that <stdarg.h>
is included from every file. So, I implemented a more reliable way in
the previous commit.

Even though INITRAMFS_SOURCE kconfig option isn't set in most of
defconfigs it is used (set) extensively by various build systems.
Commit f26661e12765 ("initramfs: make initramfs compression choice
non-optional") has changed default compression mode. Previously we
compress initramfs using available compression algorithm. Now
we don't use any compression at all by default.
It significantly increases the image size in case of build system
chooses embedded initramfs. Initially I faced with this issue while
using buildroot.
As of today it's not possible to set preferred compression mode
in target defconfig as this option depends on INITRAMFS_SOURCE
being set. Modification of all build systems either doesn't look
like good option.
Let's instead rewrite initramfs compression mode choices list
the way that "INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE" will be the last option
in the list. In that case it will be chosen only if all other
options (which implements any compression) are not available.

Since commit ddd09bcc899f ("initramfs: make compression options not
depend on INITRAMFS_SOURCE"), Kconfig asks the compression mode for
the built-in initramfs regardless of INITRAMFS_SOURCE.
It is technically simpler, but pointless from a UI perspective,
Linus says [1].
When INITRAMFS_SOURCE is empty, usr/Makefile creates a tiny default
cpio, which is so small that nobody cares about the compression.
This commit hides the Kconfig choice in that case. The default cpio
is embedded without compression, which was the original behavior.

In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host
programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004.
It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to
selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration.
This commit renames like follows:
always -> always-y
hostprogs-y -> hostprogs
So, scripts/Makefile will look like this:
always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ...
always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ...
...
hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m)
I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host
program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify
which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier.

This script sets the -e option, so it exits on any error, in which
case it exits without cleaning up the intermediate cpio_list.

Currently, usr/gen_initramfs.sh takes care of all the use-cases:
[1] generates a cpio file unless CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE points to
a single cpio archive
[2] If CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE is the path to a cpio archive,
use it as-is.
[3] Compress the cpio file according to CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_*
unless it is passed a compressed archive.
To simplify the script, move [2] and [3] to usr/Makefile.
If CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE is the path to a cpio archive, there is
no need to run this shell script.
For the cpio archive compression, you can re-use the rules from
scripts/Makefile.lib .

Currently, this script outputs a cpio file when -o option is
given, but otherwise a text file in the format recognized by
gen_init_cpio.
This behavior is unclear. Make it always output a cpio file.

When CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE is empty, the Makefile passes the -d
option to gen_initramfs.sh to create the default initramfs, which
contains /dev, /dev/console, and /root.
This commit simplifies the default behavior; remove the -d option,
and add the default cpio list.

Currently, this script is run twice, for the dependency list, and then
for the cpio archive.
The first one is re-run every time although its build log is suppressed
so nobody notices it.
Make it work more efficiently by generating the cpio and the dependency
list at the same time.

Currently, the choice of the initramfs compression mode is too complex
because users are allowed to not specify the compression mode at all.
I think it makes more sense to require users to choose the compression
mode explicitly, and delete the fallback defaults of INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION.

Even if INITRAMFS_SOURCE is empty, usr/gen_initramfs.sh generates a
tiny default initramfs, which is embedded in vmlinux.
So, defining INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION* options should be valid irrespective
of INITRAMFS_SOURCE.

init/Kconfig includes usr/Kconfig inside the "if BLK_DEV_INITRD" ...

There does not exist such a script.
I was going to fix the comments, but after some consideration, I thought
"gen_initramfs.sh" would be more suitable than "gen_initramfs_list.sh"
because it generates an initramfs image in the common usage.
The script generates a list that can be fed to gen_init_cpio only when
it is directly run without -o or -l option.

'klibcdirs' was added by commit d39a206bc35d ("kbuild: rebuild initramfs
if content of initramfs changes"). If this is just a matter of forcing
execution of the recipe line, we can replace it with FORCE.
The following code is currently useless:
$(deps_initramfs): klibcdirs
The original intent could be a hook for the klibc integration into the
kernel tree, but klibc is a separate project, which can be built
independently. Clean it up.

Adding an include guard to every header file is good practice in case
it is included multiple times.
Exported headers are compile-tested for the comprehensive sanity checks.
Let's include the same header twice. If an include guard is missing,
the header will fail to build due to redefinition of something.

Prior to commit 858805b336be ("kbuild: add $(BASH) to run scripts with
bash-extension"), this shell script was almost always run by bash since
bash is usually installed on the system by default.
Now, this script is run by sh, which might be a symlink to dash. On such
distributions, the following code emits an error:
local dev=`LC_ALL=C ls -l "${location}"`
You can reproduce the build error, for example by setting
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="/dev".

This is because `LC_ALL=C ls -l "${location}"` contains spaces.

Currently, some sanity checks for uapi headers are done by
scripts/headers_check.pl, which is wired up to the 'headers_check'
target in the top Makefile.
It is true compiling headers has better test coverage, but there
are still several headers excluded from the compile test. I like
to keep headers_check.pl for a while, but we can delete a lot of
code by moving the build rule to usr/include/Makefile.

There are both positive and negative options about this feature.
At first, I thought it was a good idea, but actually Linus stated a
negative opinion (https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/9/29/227). I admit it
is ugly and annoying.
The baseline I'd like to keep is the compile-test of uapi headers.
(Otherwise, kernel developers have no way to ensure the correctness
of the exported headers.)
I will maintain a small build rule in usr/include/Makefile.
Remove the other header test functionality.

When CONFIG_UAPI_HEADER_TEST=y, exported headers are compile-tested to
make sure they can be included from user-space.
Currently, linux/netfilter_bridge/ebtables.h is excluded from the test
coverage. To make it join the compile-test, we need to fix the build
errors attached below.
For a case like this, we decided to use __u{8,16,32,64} variable types

Since 9e3596b0c653 ("kbuild: initramfs cleanup, set target from Kconfig")
"make clean" leaves behind compressed initramfs images. Example:
$ make defconfig
$ sed -i 's|CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE=""|CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="/tmp/ir.cpio"|' .config
$ make olddefconfig
$ make -s
$ make -s clean
$ git clean -ndxf | grep initramfs
Would remove usr/initramfs_data.cpio.gz
clean rules do not have CONFIG_* context so they do not know which
compression format was used. Thus they don't know which files to delete.
Tell clean to delete all possible compression formats.
Once patched usr/initramfs_data.cpio.gz and friends are deleted by
"make clean".

option passed to the 'rm' command.
You can always pass -r, and then remove the clean-dirs syntax.

Masahiro Yamada changed the zcrypt.h header file to use __u{16,32,64}
instead of uint{16,32,64}_t with ("s390: use __u{16,32,64} instead of
uint{16,32,64}_t in uapi header").
This makes all s390 header files pass - remove zcrypt.h from the blacklist.

The two files there describes a Kernel API feature, used to
support early userspace stuff. Prepare for moving them to
the kernel API book by converting to ReST format.
The conversion itself was quite trivial: just add/mark a few
titles as such, add a literal block markup, add a table markup
and a few blank lines, in order to make Sphinx to properly parse it.
At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to

Multiple people have suggested compile-testing UAPI headers to ensure
they can be really included from user-space. "make headers_check" is
obviously not enough to catch bugs, and we often leak unresolved
references to user-space.
Use the new header-test-y syntax to implement it. Please note exported
headers are compile-tested with a completely different set of compiler
flags. The header search path is set to $(objtree)/usr/include since
exported headers should not include unexported ones.
We use -std=gnu89 for the kernel space since the kernel code highly
depends on GNU extensions. On the other hand, UAPI headers should be
written in more standardized C, so they are compiled with -std=c90.
This will emit errors if C++ style comments, the keyword 'inline', etc.
are used. Please use C style comments (/* ... */), '__inline__', etc.
in UAPI headers.
There is additional compiler requirement to enable this test because
many of UAPI headers include <stdlib.h>, <sys/ioctl.h>, <sys/time.h>,
etc. directly or indirectly. You cannot use kernel.org pre-built
toolchains [1] since they lack <stdlib.h>.
I reused CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINK to check the system header availability.
The intention is slightly different, but a compiler that can link
userspace programs provide system headers.
For now, a lot of headers need to be excluded because they cannot
be compiled standalone, but this is a good start point.

With the special case handling for Blackfin and Metag was removed by
commit 94e58e0ac312 ("export.h: remove code for prefixing symbols with
underscore"), VMLINUX_SYMBOL() is no-op.
Replace the remaining usages, then remove the definition of
VMLINUX_SYMBOL() and VMLINUX_SYMBOL_STR().

Incremental linking is gone, so rename built-in.o to built-in.a, which
is the usual extension for archive files.
This patch does two things, first is a simple search/replace:

The second is to invert nesting of nested text manipulations to avoid
filtering built-in.a out from libs-y2:

This is a follow-up to commit 57ddfdaa9a72 ("initramfs: fix disabling of
initramfs (and its compression)"). This particular commit fixed the use
case where we build the kernel with an initramfs with no compression,
and then we build the kernel with no initramfs.
Now this still left us with the same case as described here:

and was generated the first time we did generate the gzip initramfs, so
the command has not changed, nor its arguments, so we just don't call
it, no initramfs cpio is re-generated as a consequence.
The fix for this problem is just to properly keep track of the
.initramfs_cpio_data.d file by suffixing it with the compression
extension. This takes care of properly tracking dependencies such that
the initramfs get (re)generated any time files are added/deleted etc.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Commit db2aa7fd15e8 ("initramfs: allow again choice of the embedded
initram compression algorithm") introduced the possibility to select the
initramfs compression algorithm from Kconfig and while this is a nice
feature it broke the use case described below.
Here is what my build system does:
- kernel is initially configured not to have an initramfs included
- build the user space root file system
- re-configure the kernel to have an initramfs included
(CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="/path/to/romfs") and set relevant
CONFIG_INITRAMFS options, in my case, no compression option
(CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE)
- kernel is re-built with these options -> kernel+initramfs image is
copied
- kernel is re-built again without these options -> kernel image is
copied
Building a kernel without an initramfs means setting this option:
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="" (and this one only)
whereas building a kernel with an initramfs means setting these options:

Commit db2aa7fd15e85 ("initramfs: allow again choice of the embedded
initram compression algorithm") is problematic because
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION which is used to determine the
initramfs_data.cpio extension/compression is a string, and due to how
Kconfig works it will evaluate in order, how to assign it.
Setting CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE with CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE=""
cannot possibly work (because of the depends on INITRAMFS_SOURCE!=""
imposed on CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION ) yet we still get
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION assigned to ".gz" because CONFIG_RD_GZIP=y
is set in my kernel, even when there is no initramfs being built.
So we basically end-up generating two initramfs_data.cpio* files, one
without extension, and one with .gz. This causes usr/Makefile to track
usr/initramfs_data.cpio.gz, and not usr/initramfs_data.cpio anymore,
that is also largely problematic after 9e3596b0c6539e ("kbuild:
initramfs cleanup, set target from Kconfig") because we used to track
all possible initramfs_data files in the $(targets) variable before that
commit.
The end result is that the kernel with an initramfs clearly does not
contain what we expect it to, it has a stale initramfs_data.cpio file
built into it, and we keep re-generating an initramfs_data.cpio.gz file
which is not the one that we want to include in the kernel image proper.
The fix consists in hiding CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION when
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="". This puts us back in a state to the
pre-4.10 behavior where we can properly disable and re-enable initramfs
within the same kernel .config file, and be in control of what
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION is set to.

Many "embedded" architectures provide CMDLINE_FORCE to allow the kernel
to override the command line provided by an inflexible bootloader.
However there is currrently no way for the kernel to override the
initramfs image provided by the bootloader meaning there are still ways
for bootloaders to make things difficult for us.
Fix this by introducing INITRAMFS_FORCE which can prevent the kernel
from loading the bootloader supplied image.
We use CMDLINE_FORCE (and its friend CMDLINE_EXTEND) to imply that the
system has an inflexible bootloader. This allow us to avoid presenting
this config option to users of systems where inflexible bootloaders
aren't usually a problem.

When using initramfs compression, the data file compression suffix
gets quotes pulled in from Kconfig, e.g., initramfs_data.cpio".gz"
which make does not match a target and causes rebuild.
Fix this by filtering out quotes from the Kconfig string.

Choosing the appropriate compression option when using an embedded
initramfs can result in significant size differences in the resulting
data.
This is caused by avoiding double compression of the initramfs contents.
For example on my tests, choosing CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE when
compressing the kernel using XZ) results in up to 500KiB differences
(9MiB to 8.5MiB) in the kernel size as the dictionary will not get
polluted with uncomprensible data and may reuse kernel data too.
Despite embedding an uncompressed initramfs, a user may want to allow
for a compressed extra initramfs to be passed using the rd system, for
example to boot a recovery system. 9ba4bcb645898d ("initramfs: read
CONFIG_RD_ variables for initramfs compression") broke that behavior by
making the choice based on CONFIG_RD_* instead of adding
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_LZ4. Saddly, CONFIG_RD_* is also used to
choose the supported RD compression algorithms by the kernel and a user
may want to support more than one.
This patch also reverts commit 3e4e0f0a875 ("initramfs: remove
"compression mode" choice") restoring back the "compression mode" choice
and includes the CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_LZ4 option which was never
added.
As a result the following options are added or readed affecting the embedded
initramfs compression:
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE Do no compression
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_GZIP Compress using gzip
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_BZIP2 Compress using bzip2
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_LZMA Compress using lzma
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_XZ Compress using xz
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_LZO Compress using lzo
INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_LZ4 Compress using lz4
These depend on the corresponding CONFIG_RD_* option being set (except
NONE which has no dependencies).
This patch depends on the previous one (the previous version didn't) to
simplify the way in which the algorithm is chosen and keep backwards
compatibility with the behaviour introduced by 9ba4bcb645898
("initramfs: read CONFIG_RD_ variables for initramfs compression").

The kernel has support for (nearly) every compression algorithm known to
man, each to handle some particular microscopic niche.
Unfortunately all of these always get compiled in if you want to support
INITRDs, and can be only disabled when CONFIG_EXPERT is set.
I don't see why I need to set EXPERT just to properly configure the initrd
compression algorithms, and not always include every possible algorithm
Usually the initrd is just compressed with gzip anyways, at least that's
true on all distributions I use.
Remove the dependencies for initrd compression on CONFIG_EXPERT.
Make the various options just default y, which should be good enough to
not break any previous configuration.

Commit 9ba4bcb64589 ("initramfs: read CONFIG_RD_ variables for initramfs
compression") removed the users of the various INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_*
Kconfig symbols. So since v3.13 the entire "Built-in initramfs
compression mode" choice is a set of knobs connected to nothing. The
entire choice can safely be removed.

When expert configuration option(CONFIG_EXPERT) is enabled, menuconfig
offers a choice of compression algorithm to compress initial ramfs image;
This choice is stored into CONFIG_RD_* variables. But usr/Makefile uses
earlier INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_* macros to build initial ramfs file. Since
none of them is defined, resulting 'initramfs_data.cpio' file remains
un-compressed.
This patch updates the Makefile to use CONFIG_RD_* variables and adds
support for LZ4 compression algorithm. Also updates the
'gen_initramfs_list.sh' script to check whether a selected compression
command is accessible or not. And fall-back to default gzip(1)
compression when it is not.

getenv() may return NULL if given environment variable does not exist
which leads to NULL dereference when calling strncat.
Besides that, the environment variable name was copied to a temporary
env_var buffer, but this copying can be avoided by simply using the input
string.
Lastly, the whole loop can be greatly simplified by using the snprintf
function instead of the playing with strncat.
By the way, the current implementation allows a recursive variable
expansion, as in:
$ echo 'out ${A} out ' | A='a ${B} a' B=b /tmp/a
out a b a out
I'm assuming this is just a side effect and not a conscious decision
(especially as this may lead to infinite loop), but I didn't want to
change this behaviour without consulting.
If the current behaviour is deamed incorrect, I'll be happy to send
a patch without recursive processing.

Fix possible overflow of the buffer used for expanding environment
variables when building file list.
In the extremely unlikely case of an attacker having control over the
environment variables visible to gen_init_cpio, control over the
contents of the file gen_init_cpio parses, and gen_init_cpio was built
without compiler hardening, the attacker can gain arbitrary execution
control via a stack buffer overflow.
$ cat usr/crash.list
file foo ${BIG}${BIG}${BIG}${BIG}${BIG}${BIG} 0755 0 0
$ BIG=$(perl -e 'print "A" x 4096;') ./usr/gen_init_cpio usr/crash.list
*** buffer overflow detected ***: ./usr/gen_init_cpio terminated
This also replaces the space-indenting with tabs.

gen_init_cpio gets the current time and uses it for each symlink,
special file, and directory. Grab the current time once and make it
possible to override it with the KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP variable for
reproducible builds.

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.
This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).
Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

This implements the API defined in <linux/decompress/generic.h> which is
used for kernel, initramfs, and initrd decompression. This patch together
with the first patch is enough for XZ-compressed initramfs and initrd;
XZ-compressed kernel will need arch-specific changes.
The buffering requirements described in decompress_unxz.c are stricter
than with gzip, so the relevant changes should be done to the
arch-specific code when adding support for XZ-compressed kernel.
Similarly, the heap size in arch-specific pre-boot code may need to be
increased (30 KiB is enough).
The XZ decompressor needs memmove(), memeq() (memcmp() == 0), and
memzero() (memset(ptr, 0, size)), which aren't available in all
arch-specific pre-boot environments. I'm including simple versions in
decompress_unxz.c, but a cleaner solution would naturally be nicer.

In usr/gen_init_cpio.c::cpio_mkfile() a call to stat() is made based on
pathname, subsequently the file is open()'ed and then the value of the
initial stat() call is used to allocate a buffer. This is not safe since
the file may change between the call to stat() and the call to open().
Safer to just open() the file and then do fstat() using the filedescriptor
returned by open.

When we extracted the generated cpio archive using "cpio -id" command,
it complained,
cpio: Removing leading `/' from member names
var/run
cpio: Removing leading `/' from member names
var/lib
cpio: Removing leading `/' from member names
var/lib/misc
It is worse with the latest "cpio" or "pax", which tries to overwrite
the host file system with the leading '/'.
So the leading '/' of file names should be removed. This is consistent
with the initramfs come with major distributions such as Fedora or
Debian, etc.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)
As pointed out by Kerstin Jonsson <kerstin.jonsson@ericsson.com>, this
is due to CONFIG_32BIT not being defined, so the initramfs size field is
done as a 64-bit quad. On little-endian (like x86) this doesn matter,
but on a big-endian machine the 32-bit reads will see the (zero) high
bits.
Only mips, s390, and score set CONFIG_32BIT for 32-bit builds, so fix it for
all other 32-bit arches by inverting the logic and testing for CONFIG_64BIT,
which should be defined on all 64-bit arches.

The size of a built-in initramfs is calculated in init/initramfs.c by
"__initramfs_end - __initramfs_start". Those symbols are defined in the
linker script include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h:

If the initramfs file has an odd number of bytes, the "__initramfs_end"
symbol points to an odd address, for example, the symbols in the
System.map might look like:

At least on s390 this causes a problem:
Certain s390 instructions, especially instructions for loading addresses
(larl) or branch addresses must be on even addresses. The compiler loads
the symbol addresses with the "larl" instruction. This instruction sets
the last bit to 0 and, therefore, for odd size files, the calculated size
is one byte less than it should be:

To fix the problem, this patch introduces the global variable
__initramfs_size, which is calculated in the "usr/initramfs_data.S" file.
The populate_rootfs() function can then use the start marker of the
.init.ramfs section and the value of __initramfs_size for loading the
initramfs. Because the start marker and size is sufficient, the
__initramfs_end symbol is no longer needed and is removed.

Remove initramfs_data.{lzo,lzma,gz,bz2}.S variants and use a common
implementation in initramfs_data.S. The common implementation expects the
file name of the initramfs to be defined in INITRAMFS_IMAGE.
Change the Makefile to set the INITRAMFS_IMAGE define symbol according
to the selected compression method.

Impact: quiet Kconfig warning
It appears that Kconfig simply has no way to provide defaults for
entries that exist inside a conditionalized choice block.
Fortunately, it turns out we don't actually ever use
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_COMPRESSION_NONE, so we can just drop it for
everything outside the choice block.

Impact: Avoids silent environment dependency
Make builtin initramfs compression an explicit configurable. The
previous version would pick a compression based on the binaries which
were installed on the system, which could lead to unexpected results.
It is now explicitly configured, and not having the appropriate
binaries installed on the build host is simply an error.

Impact: Resolves build failures in some configurations
Makes it possible to disable CONFIG_RD_GZIP . In that case, the
built-in initramfs will be compressed by whatever compressor is
available (bzip2 or lzma) or left uncompressed if none is available.
It also removes a couple of warnings which occur when no ramdisk
compression at all is chosen.
It also restores the select ZLIB_INFLATE in drivers/block/Kconfig
which somehow came missing. This is needed to activate compilation of
the stuff in zlib_deflate.

Modify gen_init_cpio so that lines that specify files can contain
what looks like a shell variable that's expanded during processing.
For example:
file /sbin/kinit ${RFS_BASE}/usr/src/klibc/kinit/kinit 0755 0 0
given RFS_BASE is "/some/directory" in the environment
would be expanded to
file /sbin/kinit /some/directory/usr/src/klibc/kinit/kinit 0755 0 0
If several environment variables appear in a line, they are all expanded
with processing happening from left to right.
Undefined variables expand to a null string.
Syntax errors stop processing, letting the existing error handling
show the user offending line.
This patch helps embedded folks who frequently create several
RFS directories and then switch between them as they're tuning
an initramfs.

Extend usr/gen_init_cpio.c "file" entry, adding support for hard links.
Previous format:
file <name> <location> <mode> <uid> <gid>
New format:
file <name> <location> <mode> <uid> <gid> [<hard links>]
The hard links specification is optional, keeping the previous
behaviour.
All hard links are defined sequentially in the resulting cpio and the
file data is present only in the last link. This is the behaviour of
GNU's cpio and is supported by the kernel initramfs extractor.

The file init/initramfs.c is always compiled and linked in the kernel
vmlinux even when BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INITRD are disabled and the
system isn't using any form of an initramfs or initrd. In this situation
the code is only used to unpack a (static) default initial rootfilesystem.
The current init/initramfs.c code. usr/initramfs_data.o compiles to a size
of ~15 kbytes. Disabling BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INTRD shrinks the kernel
code size with ~60 Kbytes.
This patch avoids compiling in the code and data for initramfs support if
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not defined. Instead of the initramfs code and
data it uses a small routine in init/noinitramfs.c to setup an initial
static default environment for mounting a rootfilesystem later on in the
kernel initialisation process. The new code is: 164 bytes of size.
The patch is separated in two parts:
1) doesn't compile initramfs code when CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not set
2) changing all plaforms vmlinux.lds.S files to not reserve an area of
PAGE_SIZE when CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not set.

Fix bug 7401.
Handle more than one source dir or file list to the initramfs gen scripts.
The Kconfig help for INITRAMFS_SOURCE claims that you can specify multiple
space-separated sources in order to allow unprivileged users to build an
image. There are two bugs in the current implementation that prevent this
from working.
First, we pass "file1 dir2" to the gen_initramfs_list.sh script, which it
obviously can't open.
Second, gen_initramfs_list.sh -l outputs multiple definitions for
deps_initramfs -- one for each argument.

Consistently decide when to rebuild a target across all of
if_changed, if_changed_dep, if_changed_rule.
PHONY targets are now treated alike (ignored) for all targets
While add it make Kbuild.include almost readable by factoring out a few
bits to some common variables and reuse this in Makefile.build.

When a file supplied via CONFIG_INITRAMFS pointed to a file
for which kbuild had a rule to compile it (foo.c => foo.o)
then kbuild would compile the file before adding the
file to the initramfs.
Teach make that files included in initramfs shall not be updated by adding
an 'empty command'. (See "Using Empty Commands" in info make).

Fix potential NULL pointer deref in gen_init_cpio.c spotted by coverity
checker. This fixes coverity bug #86
Without this patch we risk dereferencing a NULL `type' in the
"if ('\n' == *type) {" line.

initramfs.cpio.gz being build in usr/ and included in the
kernel was not rebuild when the included files changed.
To fix this the following was done:
- let gen_initramfs.sh generate a list of files and directories included
in the initramfs
- gen_initramfs generate the gzipped cpio archive so we could simplify
the kbuild file (Makefile)
- utilising the kbuild infrastructure so when uid/gid root mapping changes
the initramfs will be rebuild
With this change we have a much more robust initramfs generation.

This still leaves driver and architecture-specific subdirectories alone,
but gets rid of the bulk of the "generic" generated files that we should
ignore.

Kbuild.include is a placeholder for definitions originally present in
both the top-level Makefile and scripts/Makefile.build.
There were a slight difference in the filechk definition, so the most videly
used version was kept and usr/Makefile was adopted for this syntax.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
