Add a new field into struct fib_dump_filter, to let callers
tell if they use RTNL locking or RCU.
This is used in the following patch, when inet_dump_fib()

After deleting an interface address in fib_del_ifaddr(), the function
scans the fib_info list for stray entries and calls fib_flush() and
fib_table_flush(). Then the stray entries will be deleted silently and no
RTM_DELROUTE notification will be sent.
This lack of notification can make routing daemons, or monitor like
`ip monitor route` miss the routing changes. e.g.
+ ip link add dummy1 type dummy
+ ip link add dummy2 type dummy
+ ip link set dummy1 up
+ ip link set dummy2 up
+ ip addr add 192.168.5.5/24 dev dummy1
+ ip route add 7.7.7.0/24 dev dummy2 src 192.168.5.5

Deleted local 192.168.5.5 dev dummy1 table local proto kernel scope host src 192.168.5.5
As Ido reminded, fib_table_flush() isn't only called when an address is
deleted, but also when an interface is deleted or put down. The lack of
notification in these cases is deliberate. And commit 7c6bb7d2faaf
("net/ipv6: Add knob to skip DELROUTE message on device down") introduced
a sysctl to make IPv6 behave like IPv4 in this regard. So we can't send
the route delete notify blindly in fib_table_flush().
To fix this issue, let's add a new flag in "struct fib_info" to track the
deleted prefer source address routes, and only send notify for them.
After update:
+ ip monitor route
+ ip addr del 192.168.5.5/24 dev dummy1
Deleted 192.168.5.0/24 dev dummy1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5

ensure IPv4 routes aren't influenced by ECN bits when configured with
non-zero rtm_tos.
Before this patch, IPv4 routes specifying an rtm_tos with some of the
ECN bits set were accepted. However they wouldn't work (never match) as
IPv4 normally clears the ECN bits with IPTOS_RT_MASK before doing a FIB
lookup (although a few buggy code paths don't).
After this patch, IPv4 routes specifying an rtm_tos with any ECN bit
set is rejected.
Note: IPv6 routes ignore rtm_tos altogether, any rtm_tos is accepted,

A subsequent patch will add a new multipath hash policy where the packet
fields used for multipath hash calculation are determined by user space.
This patch adds a sysctl that allows user space to set these fields.
The packet fields are represented using a bitmask and are common between
IPv4 and IPv6 to allow user space to use the same numbering across both
protocols. For example, to hash based on standard 5-tuple:
# sysctl -w net.ipv4.fib_multipath_hash_fields=0x0037
net.ipv4.fib_multipath_hash_fields = 0x0037
The kernel rejects unknown fields, for example:
# sysctl -w net.ipv4.fib_multipath_hash_fields=0x1000
sysctl: setting key "net.ipv4.fib_multipath_hash_fields": Invalid argument

After installing a route to the kernel, user space receives an
acknowledgment, which means the route was installed in the kernel, but not
necessarily in hardware.
The asynchronous nature of route installation in hardware can lead to a
routing daemon advertising a route before it was actually installed in
hardware. This can result in packet loss or mis-routed packets until the
route is installed in hardware.
To avoid such cases, previous patch set added the ability to emit
RTM_NEWROUTE notifications whenever RTM_F_OFFLOAD/RTM_F_TRAP flags
are changed, this behavior is controlled by sysctl.
With the above mentioned behavior, it is possible to know from user-space
if the route was offloaded, but if the offload fails there is no indication
to user-space. Following a failure, a routing daemon will wait indefinitely
for a notification that will never come.
This patch adds an "offload_failed" indication to IPv4 routes, so that
users will have better visibility into the offload process.
'struct fib_alias', and 'struct fib_rt_info' are extended with new field
that indicates if route offload failed. Note that the new field is added
using unused bit and therefore there is no need to increase structs size.

FIB lookups can return an entry that references an external nexthop.
While walking the nexthop struct we do not want to make multiple calls
into the nexthop code which can result in 2 different structs getting
accessed - one returning the number of paths the rest of the loop
seeing a different nh_grp struct. If the nexthop group shrunk, the
result is an attempt to access a fib_nh_common that does not exist for
the new nh_grp struct but did for the old one.
To fix that move the device evaluation code to a helper that can be
used for inline fib_nh path as well as external nexthops.
Update the existing check for fi->nh in fib_table_lookup to call a
new helper, nexthop_get_nhc_lookup, which walks the external nexthop
with a single rcu dereference.

In case we can't find a ->dumpit callback for the requested
(family, type) pair, we fall back to (PF_UNSPEC,type). In effect, we're
in the same situation as if userspace had requested a PF_UNSPEC
dump. For RTM_GETROUTE, that handler is rtnl_dump_all, which calls all
the registered RTM_GETROUTE handlers.
The requested table id may or may not exist for all of those
families. commit ae677bbb4441 ("net: Don't return invalid table id
error when dumping all families") fixed the problem when userspace
explicitly requests a PF_UNSPEC dump, but missed the fallback case.
For example, when we pass ipv6.disable=1 to a kernel with
CONFIG_IP_MROUTE=y and CONFIG_IP_MROUTE_MULTIPLE_TABLES=y,
the (PF_INET6, RTM_GETROUTE) handler isn't registered, so we end up in
rtnl_dump_all, and listing IPv6 routes will unexpectedly print:
# ip -6 r
Error: ipv4: MR table does not exist.
Dump terminated
commit ae677bbb4441 introduced the dump_all_families variable, which
gets set when userspace requests a PF_UNSPEC dump. However, we can't
simply set the family to PF_UNSPEC in rtnetlink_rcv_msg in the
fallback case to get dump_all_families == true, because some messages
types (for example RTM_GETRULE and RTM_GETNEIGH) only register the
PF_UNSPEC handler and use the family to filter in the kernel what is
dumped to userspace. We would then export more entries, that userspace
would have to filter. iproute does that, but other programs may not.
Instead, this patch removes dump_all_families and updates the
RTM_GETROUTE handlers to check if the family that is being dumped is
their own. When it's not, which covers both the intentional PF_UNSPEC
dumps (as dump_all_families did) and the fallback case, ignore the
missing table id error.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

When performing L3 offload, routes and nexthops are usually programmed
into two different tables in the underlying device. Therefore, the fact
that a nexthop resides in hardware does not necessarily mean that all
the associated routes also reside in hardware and vice-versa.
While the kernel can signal to user space the presence of a nexthop in
hardware (via 'RTNH_F_OFFLOAD'), it does not have a corresponding flag
for routes. In addition, the fact that a route resides in hardware does
not necessarily mean that the traffic is offloaded. For example,
unreachable routes (i.e., 'RTN_UNREACHABLE') are programmed to trap
packets to the CPU so that the kernel will be able to generate the
appropriate ICMP error packet.
This patch adds an "offload" and "trap" indications to IPv4 routes, so
that users will have better visibility into the offload process.
'struct fib_alias' is extended with two new fields that indicate if the
route resides in hardware or not and if it is offloading traffic from
the kernel or trapping packets to it. Note that the new fields are added
in the 6 bytes hole and therefore the struct still fits in a single
cache line [1].
Capable drivers are expected to invoke fib_alias_hw_flags_set() with the
route's key in order to set the flags.
The indications are dumped to user space via a new flags (i.e.,
'RTM_F_OFFLOAD' and 'RTM_F_TRAP') in the 'rtm_flags' field in the
ancillary header.

fib_dump_info() is used to prepare RTM_{NEW,DEL}ROUTE netlink messages
using the passed arguments. Currently, the function takes 11 arguments,
6 of which are attributes of the route being dumped (e.g., prefix, TOS).

passing yet another argument, change the function to take a struct

The following patches add back the ability to dump IPv4 and IPv6 exception
routes, and we need to allow selection of regular routes or exceptions.
Use RTM_F_CLONED as filter to decide whether to dump routes or exceptions:
iproute2 passes it in dump requests (except for IPv6 cache flush requests,
this will be fixed in iproute2) and this used to work as long as
exceptions were stored directly in the FIB, for both IPv4 and IPv6.
Caveat: if strict checking is not requested (that is, if the dump request
doesn't go through ip_valid_fib_dump_req()), we can't filter on protocol,
tables or route types.
In this case, filtering on RTM_F_CLONED would be inconsistent: we would
fix 'ip route list cache' by returning exception routes and at the same
time introduce another bug in case another selector is present, e.g. on
'ip route list cache table main' we would return all exception routes,
without filtering on tables.
Keep this consistent by applying no filters at all, and dumping both
routes and exceptions, if strict checking is not requested. iproute2
currently filters results anyway, and no unwanted results will be
presented to the user. The kernel will just dump more data than needed.
v7: No changes
v6: Rebase onto net-next, no changes
v5: New patch: add dump_routes and dump_exceptions flags in filter and
simply clear the unwanted one if strict checking is enabled, don't
ignore NLM_F_MATCH and don't set filter_set if NLM_F_MATCH is set.
Skip filtering altogether if no strict checking is requested:
selecting routes or exceptions only would be inconsistent with the
fact we can't filter on tables.

Use helpers to access fib_nh and fib_nhs fields of a fib_info. Drop the
fib_dev macro which is an alias for the first nexthop. Replacements:
fi->fib_dev --> fib_info_nh(fi, 0)->fib_nh_dev
fi->fib_nh --> fib_info_nh(fi, 0)
fi->fib_nh[i] --> fib_info_nh(fi, i)
fi->fib_nhs --> fib_info_num_path(fi)
where fib_info_nh(fi, i) returns fi->fib_nh[nhsel] and fib_info_num_path
returns fi->fib_nhs.
Move the existing fib_info_nhc to nexthop.h and define the new ones
there. A later patch adds a check if a fib_info uses a nexthop object,
and defining the helpers in nexthop.h avoid circular header
dependencies.
After this all remaining open coded references to fi->fib_nhs and
fi->fib_nh are in:
- fib_create_info and helpers used to lookup an existing fib_info
entry, and
- the netdev event functions fib_sync_down_dev and fib_sync_up.
The latter two will not be reused for nexthops, and the fib_create_info
will be updated to handle a nexthop in a fib_info.

Add fib_info_notify_update to walk the fib and send RTM_NEWROUTE
notifications with NLM_F_REPLACE set for entries linked to a fib_info
that have nh_updated flag set. This helper will be used by the nexthop
code to notify userspace of routes that are impacted when a nexthop
config is updated via replace. The new function and its helper are
similar to how fib_flush and fib_table_flush work for address delete
and link down events.
This notification is needed for legacy apps that do not understand
the new nexthop object. Apps that are nexthop aware can use the
RTA_NH_ID attribute in the route notification to just ignore it.

nhc_flags holds the RTNH_F flags for a given nexthop (fib{6}_nh).
All of the RTNH_F_ flags fit in an unsigned char, and since the API to
userspace (rtnh_flags and lower byte of rtm_flags) is 1 byte it can not
grow. Make nhc_flags in fib_nh_common an unsigned char and shrink the
size of the struct by 8, from 56 to 48 bytes.
Update the flags arguments for up netdevice events and fib_nexthop_info
which determines the RTNH_F flags to return on a dump/event. The RTNH_F
flags are passed in the lower byte of rtm_flags which is an unsigned int
so use a temp variable for the flags to fib_nexthop_info and combine
with rtm_flags in the caller.

Add support for RTA_VIA and allow an IPv6 nexthop for v4 routes:

$ ip ro ls
...
172.16.1.0/24 via inet6 2001:db8::1 dev eth0
For convenience and simplicity, userspace can use RTA_VIA to specify

IPv4 routing tables are flushed in two cases:
1. In response to events in the netdev and inetaddr notification chains
2. When a network namespace is being dismantled
In both cases only routes associated with a dead nexthop group are
flushed. However, a nexthop group will only be marked as dead in case it
is populated with actual nexthops using a nexthop device. This is not
the case when the route in question is an error route (e.g.,
'blackhole', 'unreachable').
Therefore, when a network namespace is being dismantled such routes are
not flushed and leaked [1].
To reproduce:
# ip netns add blue
# ip -n blue route add unreachable 192.0.2.0/24
# ip netns del blue
Fix this by not skipping error routes that are not marked with
RTNH_F_DEAD when flushing the routing tables.
To prevent the flushing of such routes in case #1, add a parameter to
fib_table_flush() that indicates if the table is flushed as part of
namespace dismantle or not.
Note that this problem does not exist in IPv6 since error routes are
associated with the loopback device.

Since commit 5aad1de5ea2c ("ipv4: use separate genid for next hop
exceptions"), exceptions get deprecated separately from cached
routes. In particular, administrative changes don't clear PMTU anymore.
As Stefano described in commit e9fa1495d738 ("ipv6: Reflect MTU changes
on PMTU of exceptions for MTU-less routes"), the PMTU discovered before
the local MTU change can become stale:
- if the local MTU is now lower than the PMTU, that PMTU is now
incorrect
- if the local MTU was the lowest value in the path, and is increased,
we might discover a higher PMTU
Similarly to what commit e9fa1495d738 did for IPv6, update PMTU in those
cases.
If the exception was locked, the discovered PMTU was smaller than the
minimal accepted PMTU. In that case, if the new local MTU is smaller
than the current PMTU, let PMTU discovery figure out if locking of the
exception is still needed.
To do this, we need to know the old link MTU in the NETDEV_CHANGEMTU
notifier. By the time the notifier is called, dev->mtu has been
changed. This patch adds the old MTU as additional information in the
notifier structure, and a new call_netdevice_notifiers_u32() function.

Fun set of conflict resolutions here...
For the mac80211 stuff, these were fortunately just parallel
adds. Trivially resolved.
In drivers/net/phy/phy.c we had a bug fix in 'net' that moved the
function phy_disable_interrupts() earlier in the file, whilst in
'net-next' the phy_error() call from this function was removed.
In net/ipv4/xfrm4_policy.c, David Ahern's changes to remove the
'rt_table_id' member of rtable collided with a bug fix in 'net' that
added a new struct member "rt_mtu_locked" which needs to be copied
over here.
The mlxsw driver conflict consisted of net-next separating
the span code and definitions into separate files, whilst
a 'net' bug fix made some changes to that moved code.
The mlx5 infiniband conflict resolution was quite non-trivial,
the RDMA tree's merge commit was used as a guide here, and
here are their notes:
====================
Due to bug fixes found by the syzkaller bot and taken into the for-rc
branch after development for the 4.17 merge window had already started
being taken into the for-next branch, there were fairly non-trivial
merge issues that would need to be resolved between the for-rc branch
and the for-next branch. This merge resolves those conflicts and
provides a unified base upon which ongoing development for 4.17 can
be based.
Conflicts:
drivers/infiniband/hw/mlx5/main.c - Commit 42cea83f9524
(IB/mlx5: Fix cleanup order on unload) added to for-rc and
commit b5ca15ad7e61 (IB/mlx5: Add proper representors support)
add as part of the devel cycle both needed to modify the
init/de-init functions used by mlx5. To support the new
representors, the new functions added by the cleanup patch
needed to be made non-static, and the init/de-init list
added by the representors patch needed to be modified to
match the init/de-init list changes made by the cleanup
patch.
Updates:
drivers/infiniband/hw/mlx5/mlx5_ib.h - Update function
prototypes added by representors patch to reflect new function
names as changed by cleanup patch

Prior to the rework of PMTU information storage in commit
2c8cec5c10bc ("ipv4: Cache learned PMTU information in inetpeer."),
when a PMTU event advertising a PMTU smaller than
net.ipv4.route.min_pmtu was received, we would disable setting the DF
flag on packets by locking the MTU metric, and set the PMTU to
net.ipv4.route.min_pmtu.
Since then, we don't disable DF, and set PMTU to
net.ipv4.route.min_pmtu, so the intermediate router that has this link
with a small MTU will have to drop the packets.
This patch reestablishes pre-2.6.39 behavior by splitting
rtable->rt_pmtu into a bitfield with rt_mtu_locked and rt_pmtu.
rt_mtu_locked indicates that we shouldn't set the DF bit on that path,
and is checked in ip_dont_fragment().
One possible workaround is to set net.ipv4.route.min_pmtu to a value low
enough to accommodate the lowest MTU encountered.

Unlike the routing tables, the FIB rules share a common core, so instead
of replicating the same logic for each address family we can simply dump
the rules and send notifications from the core itself.

The FIB notification chain is currently soley used by IPv4 code.
However, we're going to introduce IPv6 FIB offload support, which
requires these notification as well.
As explained in commit c3852ef7f2f8 ("ipv4: fib: Replay events when
registering FIB notifier"), upon registration to the chain, the callee
receives a full dump of the FIB tables and rules by traversing all the
net namespaces. The integrity of the dump is ensured by a per-namespace
sequence counter that is incremented whenever a change to the tables or
rules occurs.
In order to allow more address families to use the chain, each family is
expected to register its fib_notifier_ops in its pernet init. These
operations allow the common code to read the family's sequence counter
as well as dump its tables and rules in the given net namespace.
Additionally, a 'family' parameter is added to sent notifications, so
that listeners could distinguish between the different families.
Implement the common code that allows listeners to register to the chain
and for address families to register their fib_notifier_ops. Subsequent
patches will implement these operations in IPv6.
In the future, ipmr and ip6mr will be extended to provide these
notifications as well.

This patch adds support for ECMP hash policy choice via a new sysctl
called fib_multipath_hash_policy and also adds support for L4 hashes.
The current values for fib_multipath_hash_policy are:
0 - layer 3 (default)
1 - layer 4
If there's an skb hash already set and it matches the chosen policy then it
will be used instead of being calculated (currently only for L4).
In L3 mode we always calculate the hash due to the ICMP error special
case, the flow dissector's field consistentification should handle the
address order thus we can remove the address reversals.
If the skb is provided we always use it for the hash calculation,
otherwise we fallback to fl4, that is if skb is NULL fl4 has to be set.

Whenever a FIB rule is added or removed, a notification is sent in the
FIB notification chain. However, listeners don't have a way to tell
which rule was added or removed.
This is problematic as we would like to give listeners the ability to
decide which action to execute based on the notified rule. Specifically,
offloading drivers should be able to determine if they support the
reflection of the notified FIB rule and flush their LPM tables in case
they don't.
Do that by adding a notifier info to these notifications and embed the
common FIB rule struct in it.

Currently, when non-default (custom) FIB rules are used, devices capable
of layer 3 offloading flush their tables and let the kernel do the
forwarding instead.
When these devices' drivers are loaded they register to the FIB
notification chain, which lets them know about the existence of any
custom FIB rules. This is done by sending a RULE_ADD notification based
on the value of 'net->ipv4.fib_has_custom_rules'.
This approach is problematic when VRF offload is taken into account, as
upon the creation of the first VRF netdev, a l3mdev rule is programmed
to direct skbs to the VRF's table.
Instead of merely reading the above value and sending a single RULE_ADD
notification, we should iterate over all the FIB rules and send a
detailed notification for each, thereby allowing offloading drivers to
sanitize the rules they don't support and potentially flush their
tables.
While l3mdev rules are uniquely marked, the default rules are not.
Therefore, when they are being notified they might invoke offloading
drivers to unnecessarily flush their tables.
Solve this by adding an helper to check if a FIB rule is a default rule.
Namely, its selector should match all packets and its action should
point to the local, main or default tables.
As noted by David Ahern, uniquely marking the default rules is
insufficient. When using VRFs, it's common to avoid false hits by moving
the rule for the local table to just before the main table:
Default configuration:
$ ip rule show
0: from all lookup local
32766: from all lookup main
32767: from all lookup default
Common configuration with VRFs:
$ ip rule show
1000: from all lookup [l3mdev-table]
32765: from all lookup local
32766: from all lookup main
32767: from all lookup default

Most of the code concerned with the FIB notification chain currently
resides in fib_trie.c, but this isn't really appropriate, as the FIB

Therefore, it makes sense to move the common FIB notification code to a

Commit b90eb7549499 ("fib: introduce FIB notification infrastructure")
introduced a new notification chain to notify listeners (f.e., switchdev
drivers) about addition and deletion of routes.
However, upon registration to the chain the FIB tables can already be
populated, which means potential listeners will have an incomplete view
of the tables.
Solve that by dumping the FIB tables and replaying the events to the
passed notification block. The dump itself is done using RCU in order
not to starve consumers that need RTNL to make progress.
The integrity of the dump is ensured by reading the FIB change sequence
counter before and after the dump under RTNL. This allows us to avoid
the problematic situation in which the dumping process sends a ENTRY_ADD
notification following ENTRY_DEL generated by another process holding
RTNL.
Callers of the registration function may pass a callback that is
executed in case the dump was inconsistent with current FIB tables.
The number of retries until a consistent dump is achieved is set to a
fixed number to prevent callers from looping for long periods of time.
In case current limit proves to be problematic in the future, it can be
easily converted to be configurable using a sysctl.

The patch that removed the FIB offload infrastructure was a bit too
aggressive and also removed code needed to clean up us splitting the table
if additional rules were added. Specifically the function
fib_trie_flush_external was called at the end of a new rule being added to
flush the foreign trie entries from the main trie.
I updated the code so that we only call fib_trie_flush_external on the main
table so that we flush the entries for local from main. This way we don't
call it for every rule change which is what was happening previously.

When deleting an IP address from an interface, there is a clean-up of
routes which refer to this local address. However, there was no check to
see that the VRF matched. This meant that deletion wasn't confined to
the VRF it should have been.
To solve this, a new field has been added to fib_info to hold a table
id. When removing fib entries corresponding to a local ip address, this
table id is also used in the comparison.
The table id is populated when the fib_info is created. This was already
done in some places, but not in ip_rt_ioctl(). This has now been fixed.

Man page of ip-route(8) says following about route types:
unreachable - these destinations are unreachable. Packets are dis‐
carded and the ICMP message host unreachable is generated. The local
senders get an EHOSTUNREACH error.
blackhole - these destinations are unreachable. Packets are dis‐
carded silently. The local senders get an EINVAL error.
prohibit - these destinations are unreachable. Packets are discarded
and the ICMP message communication administratively prohibited is
generated. The local senders get an EACCES error.
In the inet6 address family, this was correct, except the local senders
got ENETUNREACH error instead of EHOSTUNREACH in case of unreachable route.

fib_select_default considers alternative routes only when
res->fi is for the first alias in res->fa_head. In the
common case this can happen only when the initial lookup
matches the first alias with highest TOS value. This
prevents the alternative routes to require specific TOS.
This patch solves the problem as follows:
- routes that require specific TOS should be returned by
fib_select_default only when TOS matches, as already done
in fib_table_lookup. This rule implies that depending on the
TOS we can have many different lists of alternative gateways
and we have to keep the last used gateway (fa_default) in first
alias for the TOS instead of using single tb_default value.
- as the aliases are ordered by many keys (TOS desc,
fib_priority asc), we restrict the possible results to
routes with matching TOS and lowest metric (fib_priority)
and routes that match any TOS, again with lowest metric.
For example, packet with TOS 8 can not use gw3 (not lowest
metric), gw4 (different TOS) and gw6 (not lowest metric),
all other gateways can be used:
tos 8 via gw1 metric 2 <--- res->fa_head and res->fi
tos 8 via gw2 metric 2
tos 8 via gw3 metric 3
tos 4 via gw4
tos 0 via gw5
tos 0 via gw6 metric 1

This feature is only enabled with the new per-interface or ipv4 global
sysctls called 'ignore_routes_with_linkdown'.
net.ipv4.conf.all.ignore_routes_with_linkdown = 0
net.ipv4.conf.default.ignore_routes_with_linkdown = 0
net.ipv4.conf.lo.ignore_routes_with_linkdown = 0
...
When the above sysctls are set, will report to userspace that a route is
dead and will no longer resolve to this nexthop when performing a fib
lookup. This will signal to userspace that the route will not be
selected. The signalling of a RTNH_F_DEAD is only passed to userspace
if the sysctl is enabled and link is down. This was done as without it
the netlink listeners would have no idea whether or not a nexthop would
be selected. The kernel only sets RTNH_F_DEAD internally if the
interface has IFF_UP cleared.
With the new sysctl set, the following behavior can be observed
(interface p8p1 is link-down):
default via 10.0.5.2 dev p9p1
10.0.5.0/24 dev p9p1 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.5.15
70.0.0.0/24 dev p7p1 proto kernel scope link src 70.0.0.1

cache <local>
80.0.0.2 via 10.0.5.2 dev p9p1 src 10.0.5.15
cache
While the route does remain in the table (so it can be modified if
needed rather than being wiped away as it would be if IFF_UP was
cleared), the proper next-hop is chosen automatically when the link is
down. Now interface p8p1 is linked-up:
default via 10.0.5.2 dev p9p1
10.0.5.0/24 dev p9p1 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.5.15
70.0.0.0/24 dev p7p1 proto kernel scope link src 70.0.0.1
80.0.0.0/24 dev p8p1 proto kernel scope link src 80.0.0.1
90.0.0.0/24 via 80.0.0.2 dev p8p1 metric 1
90.0.0.0/24 via 70.0.0.2 dev p7p1 metric 2
192.168.56.0/24 dev p2p1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.56.2
90.0.0.1 via 80.0.0.2 dev p8p1 src 80.0.0.1

local 80.0.0.1 dev lo src 80.0.0.1
cache <local>
80.0.0.2 dev p8p1 src 80.0.0.1

and the output changes to what one would expect.
If the sysctl is not set, the following output would be expected when
p8p1 is down:

This patch is meant to collapse local and main into one by converting
tb_data from an array to a pointer. Doing this allows us to point the
local table into the main while maintaining the same variables in the
table.
As such the tb_data was converted from an array to a pointer, and a new
array called data is added in order to still provide an object for tb_data
to point to.
In order to track the origin of the fib aliases a tb_id value was added in
a hole that existed on 64b systems. Using this we can also reverse the
merge in the event that custom FIB rules are enabled.
With this patch I am seeing an improvement of 20ns to 30ns for routing
lookups as long as custom rules are not enabled, with custom rules enabled
we fall back to split tables and the original behavior.

I don't believe are being handled correctly or are masking warnings by
locally calling rcu_read_lock/unlock instead of calling them at the correct

A common example is a call to fib_get_table followed by fib_table_lookup.

In recent testing I had disabled CONFIG_IP_MULTIPLE_TABLES and as a result
when I ran "cat /proc/net/fib_trie" the main trie was displayed multiple
times. I found that the problem line of code was in the function
fib_trie_seq_next. Specifically the line below caused the indexes to go in
the opposite direction of our traversal:
h = tb->tb_id & (FIB_TABLE_HASHSZ - 1);
This issue was that the RT tables are defined such that RT_TABLE_LOCAL is ID
255, while it is located at TABLE_LOCAL_INDEX of 0, and RT_TABLE_MAIN is 254
with a TABLE_MAIN_INDEX of 1. This means that the above line will return 1
for the local table and 0 for main. The result is that fib_trie_seq_next
will return NULL at the end of the local table, fib_trie_seq_start will
return the start of the main table, and then fib_trie_seq_next will loop on
main forever as h will always return 0.
The fix for this is to reverse the ordering of the two tables. It has the
advantage of making it so that the tables now print in the same order
regardless of if multiple tables are enabled or not. In order to make the
definition consistent with the multiple tables case I simply masked the to
RT_TABLE_XXX values by (FIB_TABLE_HASHSZ - 1). This way the two table
layouts should always stay consistent.

Commit d2d68ba9 (ipv4: Cache input routes in fib_info nexthops)
assmued that "locally destined, and routed packets, never trigger
PMTU events or redirects that will be processed by us".
However, it seems that tunnel devices do trigger PMTU events in certain
cases. At least ip_gre, ip6_gre, sit, and ipip do use the inner flow's
skb_dst(skb)->ops->update_pmtu to propage mtu information from the
outer flows. These can cause the inner flow mtu to be decreased. If
next hop exceptions are not consulted for pmtu, IP fragmentation will
not be done properly for these routes.
It also seems that we really need to have the PMTU information always
for netfilter TCPMSS clamp-to-pmtu feature to work properly.
So for the time being, cache separate copies of input routes for
each next hop exception.

commit 13d82bf5 (ipv4: Fix flushing of cached routing informations)
added the support to flush learned pmtu information.
However, using rt_genid is quite heavy as it is bumped on route
add/change and multicast events amongst other places. These can
happen quite often, especially if using dynamic routing protocols.
While this is ok with routes (as they are just recreated locally),
the pmtu information is learned from remote systems and the icmp
notification can come with long delays. It is worthy to have separate
genid to avoid excessive pmtu resets.

commit d2d68ba9fe8 (ipv4: Cache input routes in fib_info nexthops.)
introduced a regression for forwarding.
This was hard to reproduce but the symptom was that packets were
delivered to local host instead of being forwarded.
David suggested to add fib_type to fib_info so that we dont
inadvertently share same fib_info for different purposes.
With help from Julian Anastasov who provided very helpful
hints, reproduced here :
<quote>
Can it be a problem related to fib_info reuse
from different routes. For example, when local IP address
is created for subnet we have:
broadcast 192.168.0.255 dev DEV proto kernel scope link src
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.0/24 dev DEV proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.1
local 192.168.0.1 dev DEV proto kernel scope host src 192.168.0.1
The "dev DEV proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.1" is
a reused fib_info structure where we put cached routes.
The result can be same fib_info for 192.168.0.255 and
192.168.0.0/24. RTN_BROADCAST is cached only for input
routes. Incoming broadcast to 192.168.0.255 can be cached
and can cause problems for traffic forwarded to 192.168.0.0/24.
So, this patch should solve the problem because it
separates the broadcast from unicast traffic.
And the ip_route_input_slow caching will work for
local and broadcast input routes (above routes 1 and 3) just
because they differ in scope and use different fib_info.

commit 404e0a8b6a55 (net: ipv4: fix RCU races on dst refcounts) tried
to solve a race but added a problem at device/fib dismantle time :
We really want to call dst_free() as soon as possible, even if sockets
still have dst in their cache.
dst_release() calls in free_fib_info_rcu() are not welcomed.
Root of the problem was that now we also cache output routes (in
nh_rth_output), we must use call_rcu() instead of call_rcu_bh() in
rt_free(), because output route lookups are done in process context.
Based on feedback and initial patch from David Miller (adding another
call_rcu_bh() call in fib, but it appears it was not the right fix)
I left the inet_sk_rx_dst_set() helper and added __rcu attributes

If we have an output route that lacks nexthop exceptions, we can cache
it in the FIB info nexthop.
Such routes will have DST_HOST cleared because such routes refer to a
family of destinations, rather than just one.
The sequence of the handling of exceptions during route lookup is
adjusted to make the logic work properly.
Before we allocate the route, we lookup the exception.
Then we know if we will cache this route or not, and therefore whether
DST_HOST should be set on the allocated route.
Then we use DST_HOST to key off whether we should store the resulting
route, during rt_set_nexthop(), in the FIB nexthop cache.

In a regime where we have subnetted route entries, we need a way to
store persistent storage about destination specific learned values

This is implemented here via nexthop exceptions.

If rpfilter is off (or the SKB has an IPSEC path) and there are not
tclassid users, we don't have to do anything at all when
fib_validate_source() is invoked besides setting the itag to zero.
We monitor tclassid uses with a counter (modified only under RTNL and
marked __read_mostly) and we protect the fib_validate_source() real
work with a test against this counter and whether rpfilter is to be
done.
Having a way to know whether we need no tclassid processing or not
also opens the door for future optimized rpfilter algorithms that do

The specific destination is the host we direct unicast replies to.
Usually this is the original packet source address, but if we are
responding to a multicast or broadcast packet we have to use something
different.
Specifically we must use the source address we would use if we were to
send a packet to the unicast source of the original packet.
The routing cache precomputes this value, but we want to remove that
precomputation because it creates a hard dependency on the expensive
rpfilter source address validation which we'd like to make cheaper.
There are only three places where this matters:
1) ICMP replies.
2) pktinfo CMSG
3) IP options
Now there will be no real users of rt->rt_spec_dst and we can simply
remove it altogether.

fib_select_default() is a complete NOP, and completely pointless
to invoke, when we have no more than 1 default route installed.
And this is far and away the common case.
So remember how many prefixlen==0 routes we have in the routing
table, and elide the call when we have no more than one of those.
This cuts output route creation time by 157 cycles on Niagara2+.

When doing output route lookups, we have to select the source address
if the user has not specified an explicit one.
First, if the route has an explicit preferred source address
specified, then we use that.
Otherwise we search the route's outgoing interface for a suitable
address.
This search can be precomputed and cached at route insertion time.
The only missing part is that we have to refresh this precomputed
value any time addresses are added or removed from the interface, and
this is accomplished by fib_update_nh_saddrs().

Both fib_trie and fib_hash have a local implementation of
fib_table_select_default(). This is completely unnecessary
code duplication.
Since we now remember the fib_table and the head of the fib
alias list of the default route, we can implement one single
generic version of this routine.
Looking at the fib_hash implementation you may get the impression
that it's possible for there to be multiple top-level routes in
the table for the default route. The truth is, it isn't, the
insert code will only allow one entry to exist in the zero
prefix hash table, because all keys evaluate to zero and all
keys in a hash table must be unique.

The namespace is not available in the fib_sync_down_addr, add it as a
parameter.
Looking up a device by the pointer to it is OK. Looking up using a
result from fib_trie/fib_hash table lookup is also safe. No need to
fix that at all. So, just fix lookup by address and insertion to the
hash table path.

fib_sync_down can be called with an address and with a device. In
reality it is called either with address OR with a device. The
codepath inside is completely different, so lets separate it into two
calls for these two cases.

Below is a more generic patch to do fib_lookup via netlink. For others
we should say that we discussed this as a way to verify route selection.
It's also possible there are others uses for this.
In short the fist half of struct fib_result_nl is filled in by caller
and netlink call fills in the other half and returns it.
In case anyone is interested there is a corresponding user app to compare
the full routing table this was used to test implementation of the LC-trie.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
