The documentation for "%(trailers[:options])" placeholder in the
"--pretty" option of commands in the "git log" family has been
updated.

docs: adjust trailer `separator` and `key_value_separator` language
docs: correct trailer `key_value_separator` description
|
|
The language describing the trailer separator and key-value separator
default value is overly complicated.
Indicate the default with simpler "Defaults to ..." language.

The description for `key_value_separator` incorrectly states that this
separator is inserted between trailer lines, which appears likely to
have been incorrectly copied from `separator` when this option was
added.
Update the description to correctly indicate that it is a separator that
appears between the key and the value of each trailer.

Add %(decorate[:<options>]) format that lists ref names similarly to the
%d format, but which allows the otherwise fixed prefix, suffix and
separator strings to be customized. Omitted options default to the
strings used in %d.
Rename expand_separator() function used to expand %x literal formatting
codes to expand_string_arg(), as it is now used on strings other than
separators.
Examples:
- %(decorate) is equivalent to %d.
- %(decorate:prefix=,suffix=) is equivalent to %D.
- %(decorate:prefix=[,suffix=],separator=%x3B) produces a list enclosed
in square brackets and separated by semicolons.
Test the format in t4205-log-pretty-formats.sh and document it in
pretty-formats.txt.

Enclose the 'options' placeholders in the documentation of the
%(describe) and %(trailers) format specifiers in angle brackets to
clarify that they are placeholders rather than keywords.
Also remove the indentation from their descriptions, instead of
increasing it to account for the extra two angle brackets in the
headings. The indentation isn't required by asciidoc, it doesn't reflect
how the output text is formatted, and it's inconsistent with the
following bullet points that are at the same level in the output.

The previous commits added clarifications to the column alignment
placeholders, note that the spaces are optional around the parameters.
Also, a proposed extension [1] to allow hard truncation (without
ellipsis '..') highlighted that the existing code does not play well
with wide characters, such as Asian fonts and emojis.
For example, N wide characters take 2N columns so won't fit an odd number
column width, causing misalignment somewhere.
Further analysis also showed that decomposed characters, e.g. separate
`a` + `umlaut` Unicode code-points may also be mis-counted, in some cases
leaving multiple loose `umlauts` all combined together.
Add some notes about these limitations, and add basic tests to demonstrate
them.
The chosen solution for the tests is to substitute any wide character
that overlaps a splitting boundary for the unicode vertical ellipsis
code point as a rare but 'obvious' substitution.
An alternative could be the substitution with a single dot '.' which
matches regular expression usage, and our two dot ellipsis, and further
in scenarios where the bulk of the text is wide characters, would be
obvious. In mainly 'ascii' scenarios a singleton emoji being substituted
by a dot could be confusing.
It is enough that the tests fail cleanly. The final choice for the
substitute character can be deferred.

Commit a57523428b4 (pretty: support padding placeholders, %< %> and %><,
2013-04-19) introduced columnated place holders. These placeholders
can be confusing as they contain `<` and `>` characters as part
of their placeholders adjacent to the `<N>` parameters.
Add spaces either side of the `<N>` parameters in the title line.
The code (strtol) will consume any spaces around the number values
(assuming they are passed as a quoted string with spaces).
Note that the spaces are optional.
Subsequent commits will clarify other confusions.

The %(describe) placeholder by default, like `git describe`, uses a
seven-character abbreviated commit object name. This may not be
sufficient to fully describe all commits in a given repository,
resulting in a placeholder replacement changing its length because the
repository grew in size. This could cause the output of git-archive to
change.
Add the --abbrev option to `git describe` to the placeholder interface
in order to provide tools to the user for fine-tuning project defaults
and ensure reproducible archives.
One alternative would be to just always specify --abbrev=40 but this may
be a bit too biased...

Change the documentation for the various %(trailers) options so it
isn't repeating part of the documentation for "only" about how boolean
values are handled. Instead, let's split the description of that into
general documentation at the top.
It then suffices to refer to it by listing the options as
"opt[=<BOOL>]". I'm also changing it to upper-case "[=<BOOL>]" from
"[=val]" for consistency with "<SEP>"
It took me a couple of readings to realize that these options were
referring back to the "only" option's treatment of boolean
values.

Add a "key_value_separator" option to the "%(trailers)" pretty format,
to go along with the existing "separator" argument. In combination
these two options make it trivial to produce machine-readable (e.g. \0
and \0\0-delimited) format output.
As elaborated on in a previous commit which added "keyonly" it was
needlessly tedious to extract structured data from "%(trailers)"
before the addition of this "key_value_separator" option. As seen by
the test being added here extracting this data now becomes trivial.

Add support for a "keyonly". This allows for easier parsing out of the
key and value. Before if you didn't want to make assumptions about how
the key was formatted. You'd need to parse it out as e.g.:
--pretty=format:'%H%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00)' \
'%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,valueonly)'
And then proceed to deduce keys by looking at those two and
subtracting the value plus the hardcoded ": " separator from the
non-valueonly %(trailers) line. Now it's possible to simply do:
--pretty=format:'%H%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,keyonly)' \
'%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,valueonly)'
Which at least reduces it to a state machine where you get N keys and
correlate them with N values. Even better would be to have a way to
change the ": " delimiter to something easily machine-readable (a key
might contain ": " too). A follow-up change will add support for that.
I don't really have a use-case for just "keyonly" myself. I suppose it
would be useful in some cases as "key=*" matches case-insensitively,
so a plain "keyonly" will give you the variants of the keys you
matched. I'm mainly adding it to fix the inconsistency with
"valueonly".

gpg.minTrustLevel configuration variable has been introduced to
tell various signature verification codepaths the required minimum
trust level.
* hi/gpg-mintrustlevel:
gpg-interface: add minTrustLevel as a configuration option
|
|
Previously, signature verification for merge and pull operations checked
if the key had a trust-level of either TRUST_NEVER or TRUST_UNDEFINED in
verify_merge_signature(). If that was the case, the process die()d.
The other code paths that did signature verification relied entirely on
the return code from check_commit_signature(). And signatures made with
a good key, irregardless of its trust level, was considered valid by
check_commit_signature().
This difference in behavior might induce users to erroneously assume
that the trust level of a key in their keyring is always considered by
Git, even for operations where it is not (e.g. during a verify-commit or
verify-tag).
The way it worked was by gpg-interface.c storing the result from the
key/signature status *and* the lowest-two trust levels in the `result`
member of the signature_check structure (the last of these status lines
that were encountered got written to `result`). These are documented in
GPG under the subsection `General status codes` and `Key related`,
respectively [1].
The GPG documentation says the following on the TRUST_ status codes [1]:
"""
These are several similar status codes:
- TRUST_UNDEFINED <error_token>
- TRUST_NEVER <error_token>
- TRUST_MARGINAL [0 [<validation_model>]]
- TRUST_FULLY [0 [<validation_model>]]
- TRUST_ULTIMATE [0 [<validation_model>]]
For good signatures one of these status lines are emitted to
indicate the validity of the key used to create the signature.
The error token values are currently only emitted by gpgsm.
"""
My interpretation is that the trust level is conceptionally different
from the validity of the key and/or signature. That seems to also have
been the assumption of the old code in check_signature() where a result
of 'G' (as in GOODSIG) and 'U' (as in TRUST_NEVER or TRUST_UNDEFINED)
were both considered a success.
The two cases where a result of 'U' had special meaning were in
verify_merge_signature() (where this caused git to die()) and in
format_commit_one() (where it affected the output of the %G? format
specifier).
I think it makes sense to refactor the processing of TRUST_ status lines
such that users can configure a minimum trust level that is enforced
globally, rather than have individual parts of git (e.g. merge) do it
themselves (except for a grace period with backward compatibility).
I also think it makes sense to not store the trust level in the same
struct member as the key/signature status. While the presence of a
TRUST_ status code does imply that the signature is good (see the first
paragraph in the included snippet above), as far as I can tell, the
order of the status lines from GPG isn't well-defined; thus it would
seem plausible that the trust level could be overwritten with the
key/signature status if they were stored in the same member of the
signature_check structure.
This patch introduces a new configuration option: gpg.minTrustLevel. It
consolidates trust-level verification to gpg-interface.c and adds a new
`trust_level` member to the signature_check structure.
Backward-compatibility is maintained by introducing a special case in
verify_merge_signature() such that if no user-configurable
gpg.minTrustLevel is set, then the old behavior of rejecting
TRUST_UNDEFINED and TRUST_NEVER is enforced. If, on the other hand,
gpg.minTrustLevel is set, then that value overrides the old behavior.
Similarly, the %G? format specifier will continue show 'U' for
signatures made with a key that has a trust level of TRUST_UNDEFINED or
TRUST_NEVER, even though the 'U' character no longer exist in the
`result` member of the signature_check structure. A new format
specifier, %GT, is also introduced for users that want to show all
possible trust levels for a signature.
Another approach would have been to simply drop the trust-level
requirement in verify_merge_signature(). This would also have made the
behavior consistent with other parts of git that perform signature
verification. However, requiring a minimum trust level for signing keys
does seem to have a real-world use-case. For example, the build system
used by the Qubes OS project currently parses the raw output from
verify-tag in order to assert a minimum trust level for keys used to
sign git tags [2].

The standard format for referencing other commits within some projects
(such as git.git) is the reference format. This is described in
Documentation/SubmittingPatches as
If you want to reference a previous commit in the history of a stable
branch, use the format "abbreviated hash (subject, date)", like this:
....
Commit f86a374 (pack-bitmap.c: fix a memleak, 2015-03-30)
noticed that ...
....
Since this format is so commonly used, standardize it as a pretty
format.
The tests that are implemented essentially show that the format-string
does not change in response to various log options. This is useful
because, for future developers, it shows that we've considered the
limitations of the "canned format-string" approach and we are fine with
them.

In many projects the number of contributors is low enough that users know
each other and the full email address doesn't need to be displayed.
Displaying only the author's username saves a lot of columns on the screen.
Existing 'e/E' (as in "%ae" and "%aE") placeholders would show the
author's address as "prarit@redhat.com", which would waste columns to show
the same domain-part for all contributors when used in a project internal

By default trailer lines are terminated by linebreaks ('\n'). By
specifying the new 'separator' option they will instead be separated by
user provided string and have separator semantics rather than terminator
semantics. The separator string can contain the literal formatting codes
%n and %xNN allowing it to be things that are otherwise hard to type
such as %x00, or comma and end-parenthesis which would break parsing.

interpret-trailers: add an option to show only existing trailers
interpret-trailers: add an option to show only the trailers
trailer: put process_trailers() options into a struct
|
|
The interpret-trailers command recently learned some options
to make its output easier to parse (for a caller whose only
interested in picking out the trailer values). But it's not
very efficient for asking for the trailers of many commits
in a single invocation.
We already have "%(trailers)" to do that, but it doesn't
know about unfolding or omitting non-trailers. Let's plumb
those options through, so you can have the best of both.

The color placeholders have traditionally been
unconditional, showing colors even when git is not otherwise
configured to do so. This was not so bad for their original
use, which was on the command-line (and the user could
decide at that moment whether to add colors or not). But
these days we have configured formats via pretty.*, and
those should operate correctly in multiple contexts.
In 3082517 (log --format: teach %C(auto, black) to respect
color config, 2012-12-17), we gave an extended placeholder
that could be used to accomplish this. But it's rather
clunky to use, because you have to specify it individually
for each color (and their matching resets) in the format.
We shied away from just switching the default to auto,
because it is technically breaking backwards compatibility.
However, there's not really a use case for unconditional
colors. The most plausible reason you would want them is to
redirect "git log" output to a file. But there, the right
answer is --color=always, as it does the right thing both
with custom user-format colors and git-generated colors.
So let's switch to the more useful default. In the
off-chance that somebody really does find a use for
unconditional colors without wanting to enable the rest of
git's colors, we provide a new %C(always,...) to enable the
old behavior. And we can remind them of --color=always in
the documentation.

Recent patches have expanded on the trailers.c code and we have the
builtin commant git-interpret-trailers which can be used to add or
modify trailer lines. However, there is no easy way to simply display
the trailers of a commit message.
Add support for %(trailers) format modifier which will use the
trailer_info_get() calls to read trailers in an identical way as git
interpret-trailers does. Use a long format option instead of a short
name so that future work can more easily unify ref-filter and pretty
formats.

According to gpg2's doc/DETAILS:
For each signature only one of the codes GOODSIG, BADSIG,

gpg1 ("classic") behaves the same (although doc/DETAILS differs).
Currently, we parse gpg's status output for GOODSIG, BADSIG and
trust information and translate that into status codes G, B, U, N
for the %G? format specifier.
git-verify-* returns success in the GOODSIG case only. This is
somewhat in disagreement with gpg, which considers the first 5 of
the 6 above as VALIDSIG, but we err on the very safe side.
Introduce additional status codes E, X, Y, R for ERRSIG, EXPSIG,
EXPKEYSIG, and REVKEYSIG so that a user of %G? gets more information
about the absence of a 'G' on first glance.

The actual shortening rules aren't that interesting and
probably not worth getting into (I gloss over them here as
"shortened for human readability"). But the fact that %gD
shows whatever you gave on the command line is subtle and
worth mentioning. Since most people will feed a shortened

Git's "ISO" date format does not really conform to the ISO 8601
standard due to small differences, and it cannot be parsed by ISO
8601-only parsers, e.g. those of XML toolchains.
The output from "--date=iso" deviates from ISO 8601 in these ways:
- a space instead of the `T` date/time delimiter
- a space between time and time zone
- no colon between hours and minutes of the time zone
Add a strict ISO 8601 date format for displaying committer and
author dates. Use the '%aI' and '%cI' format specifiers and add
'--date=iso-strict' or '--date=iso8601-strict' date format names.

Either %<, %> or %>< standing before a placeholder specifies how many
columns (at least as the placeholder can exceed it) it takes. Each
differs on how spaces are padded:
%< pads on the right (aka left alignment)
%> pads on the left (aka right alignment)
%>< pads both ways equally (aka centered)
The (<N>) follows them, e.g. `%<(100)', to specify the number of
columns the next placeholder takes.
However, if '|' stands before (<N>), e.g. `%>|(100)', then the number
of columns is calculated so that it reaches the Nth column on screen.

Traditionally, %C(color attr) always emitted the ANSI color
sequence; it was up to the scripts that wanted to conditionally
color their output to omit %C(...) specifier when they do not want
colors.
Optionally allow "auto," to be prefixed to the color, so that the
output is colored iff we would color regular "log" output

In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic
effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc
8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup
is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing
documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to
keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the
documentation could be built on either version.
It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer
in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want
inline literals on their own merits, which are:
1. The source is much easier to read when the literal
contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead
of `master{tilde}1`.
2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we
tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of
quoting.
This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the
Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the
documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up,
or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the
output).
Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and
examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified
by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of
generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to
making the source more readable, this patch fixes several
formatting bugs:
- HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of
literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B")
- some code examples used the right-arrow character
instead of '->' because they failed to quote
- api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting
HTML contained a bogus snippet like:
<tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt>
which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole
sections of the page.
- git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a
literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes)
- mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to
erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for
author@example.com
- the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed
the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}".
- using "prime" notation like:
commit `C` and its replacement `C'`
confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between
the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant
to be inside matched quotes
- asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our
asterisks. In particular,
`credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*`
properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but
literally passed through the backslash in the second
case.

previously the only ways to alias a --pretty format within git were
either to set the format as your default format (via the format.pretty
configuration variable), or by using a regular git alias. This left the
definition of more complicated formats to the realm of "builtin or
nothing", with user-defined formats usually being reserved for quick
one-offs.
Here we allow user-defined formats to enjoy more or less the same
benefits of builtins. By defining pretty.myalias, "myalias" can be
used in place of whatever would normally come after --pretty=. This
can be a format:, tformat:, raw (ie, defaulting to tformat), or the name
of another builtin or user-defined pretty format.

The only way to safely quote arbitrary text in a pretty-print user
format is to replace instances of "%" with "%x25". This is slightly
unreadable, and many users would expect "%%" to produce a single
"%", as that is what printf format specifiers do.
This patch converts "%%" to "%" for all users of strbuf_expand():
(1) git-daemon interpolated paths
(2) pretty-print user formats
(3) merge driver command lines
Case (1) was already doing the conversion itself outside of
strbuf_expand(). Case (2) is the intended beneficiary of this patch.
Case (3) users probably won't notice, but as this is user-facing
behavior, consistently providing the quoting mechanism makes sense.

Add three new --pretty=format escapes:
%gD long reflog descriptor (e.g. refs/stash@{0})
%gd short reflog descriptor (e.g. stash@{0})
%gs reflog message
This is achieved by passing down the reflog info, if any, inside the
pretty_print_context struct.
We use the newly refactored get_reflog_selector(), and give it some
extra functionality to extract a shortened ref. The shortening is
cached inside the commit_reflogs struct; the only allocation of it
happens in read_complete_reflog(), where it is initialised to 0. Also
add another helper get_reflog_message() for the message extraction.
Note that the --format="%h %gD: %gs" tests may not work in real
repositories, as the --pretty formatter doesn't know to leave away the
": " on the last commit in an incomplete (because git-gc removed the
old part) reflog. This equivalence is nevertheless the main goal of
this patch.

This teaches the "pretty" machinery to expand '%+x' to a LF followed by
the expansion of '%x' if and only if '%x' expands to a non-empty string,
and to remove LFs before '%-x' if '%x' expands to an empty string. This
works for any supported expansion placeholder 'x'.
This is expected to be immediately useful to reproduce the commit log
message with "%s%+b%n"; "%s%n%b%n" adds one extra LF if the log message is
a one-liner.

Allow --pretty="%h %s" (and --format="%h %s") as shorthand for an often
used option --pretty=tformat:"%h %s".

Currently, the only colors available to --pretty=format
users are red, green, and blue. Rather than expand it with a
few new colors, this patch makes the usual config color
syntax available, including more colors, backgrounds, and
attributes.
Because colors are no longer bounded to a single word (e.g.,
%Cred), this uses a more advanced syntax that features a
beginning and end delimiter (but the old syntax still
works). So you can now do:
git log --pretty=tformat:'%C(yellow)%h%C(reset) %s'
to emulate --pretty=oneline, or even
git log --pretty=tformat:'%C(cyan magenta bold)%s%C(reset)'
if you want to relive the awesomeness of 4-color CGA.

Add a new format placeholder, %d, which expands to a ref name decoration
(think git log --decorate). It expands to an empty string if the commit
has no decoration, or otherwise to a comma (and space) separated list of
decorations, surrounded by parentheses and a leading space.
Michael Dressel implemented an initial version and chose the letter d,
Junio suggested to add a leading space and parentheses.

When running a command like:
git log --pretty=format:%ad --date=short
the date option was ignored. This patch causes it to use whatever
format was specified by --date (or by --relative-date, etc), just
as the non-user formats would do.

The pretty format %an does not respect .mailmap, but gives the exact
author name recorded in the commit. Sometimes it is more desirable,
however, to look if the email has another name mapped to it in .mailmap.
This commit adds %aN (and %cN for the committer name) to do exactly that.

This makes it explicit that the --pretty formats 'medium' and 'email' use the
author date (and ignore the committer date).

This adds a %xXX format which inserts two hexdigits after %x as a byte
value in the resulting string. This can be used to add a NUL byte or any
other byte that can make machine parsing easier. It is also necessary to
use fwrite to print out the data since printf will terminate if you feed
it a NUL.

This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have
crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need
to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results
still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged.

Split description of pretty formats into list of pretty options
(--pretty and --encoding) in new file Documentation/pretty-options.txt
and description of formats itself as a separate "PRETTY FORMATS"
section in pretty-formats.txt
While at it correct formatting a bit, to be better laid out in the
resulting manpages: git-rev-list(1), git-show(1), git-log(1) and
git-diff-tree(1). Those manpages now include pretty options in the
same place as it was before, and description of formats just after
all options.
Inspired by the split into two filesdocumentation for merge strategies:
Documentation/merge-options.txt and Documentation/merge-strategies.txt

Asciidoc-include it into the manuals for programs that use the
--pretty command-line option, for consistency among the docs.
This describes all the pretty-formats currently listed in the cmit_fmt
enum in commit.h, and also briefly describes the presence and format
of the 'Merge: ' line in some pretty formats.
There's a hedge that limiting your view of history can affect what
goes in the Merge: line, and that --abbrev/--no-abbrev do nothing to
the 'raw' format.
