Jiri Kosina: “depth” of the tree of maintainers

Jiri Kosina asks if the maintainer tree is too flat, wondering if imposing more sub-maintainers would help. This topic received some attention last year. Johannes Berg instead wonders if the tree is too deep, resulting in excessive delays between contribution and acceptance into mainline. Johannes sometimes reacts to this delay by putting fixes into the -next branch, marked CC stable. This can cause Greg KH to complain that material for -stable should not be showing up so prominently in the merge window. John Linville argued that Linus has the final say about maintainer-tree depth. John is a mid-level maintainer who accepts pulls from submaintainers and pushes to Dave Miller, and believes that others are also in this position, and would like to participate in any discussion on this topic.
